Howard Percy Robertson (January 27, 1903 - August 26, 1961) was a scientist known for contributions related to cosmology and the uncertainty principle.
One of Robertson's first landmark papers, a brief note in The Annals of Mathematics, series II, Vol 39, pp 101-104 (1938) entitled "Note on the preceding paper: The two body problem in general relativity" solved that problem within a degreee of approximation not improved on for many decades.
Earlier work, such as the Schwarzschild metric, were for a central body that did not move, while Robertson's solution considered two bodies orbiting each other.

Howard Percy Robertson (January 27, 1903 – August 26, 1961) was an American mathematician and physicist known for contributions related to physical cosmology and the uncertainty principle.
Robertson was born in Hoquiam, Washington and earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1922 and a master’s in mathematics and physics in 1923 from the University of Washington in Seattle.
In 1953, Robertson chaired an influential CIA committee which reviewed several well-publicized reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and recommended what was essentially a domestic propaganda program designed to reduce public interest in UFOs via a covert, mass-media program of "training and debunking." This committee is now known as the Robertson Panel.

HOWARD PERCY ROBERTSON January 27, 1903-August 26, 1961 BY JESSE L. HOWARD PERCY ROBERTSON, one of the most original workers in relativity and cosmology, was born to George Duncan Robertson and Anna McLeod in Hoquiam, Washington, January 27, 1903.
Robertson's interest in the prediction of these effects led him (1928) to predict a linear redshift-apparent magnitude (i.e., brightness) relation and even to plot the first such dia- gram from the sparse available data.
Robertson had a remarkable ability for getting to the crux of a problem and presenting his conclusions in such a manner that all could understand and appreciate them.

With Rous's input, Robertson and Turner recognized the potential to establish a series of "blood depots," forerunners to the modern blood bank, in which preserved blood was collected from O-positive (universal) donors to store for use in emergency deployment, without the need for verifying blood type of the donee.
Aware of the commercial potential of his research, Robertson was involved with the Research Corporation (New York City) in securing patents on glycol vapors and air sterilizers, and with the same agency, kept notes and manuscripts on his morphine experiments, canine pneumococcus, Bacteremia, and the effects of hydrocortisone.
Finally, Robertson's interest in ecology is reflected in a journal and nine volumes of notebooks containing data collected in 1942 to 1944 while conducting a study of the trout and vegetation of lakes in the Wind River Range of northwestern Wyoming.

 Poynting-Robertson effect
The Poynting-Robertson effect, also known as Poynting-Robertson drag, named after John Henry Poynting and Howard Percy Robertson, is a process by which solar radiation causes dust particles in a solar system to slowly spiral inward.
The effect is due to the orbital motion of the dust grains causing the radial push of the solar radiation to be offset slightly, slowing its orbit.
Poynting conceived of the force in the then-dominant "luminiferous aether" view of the propagation of light; Robertson is the one who redid the demonstration from a relativistic standpoint and confirmed the result.

Einstein Versus the Physical Review - Physics Today September 2005
In the summer of 1936, the relativist Howard Percy Robertson (pictured in figure 3) returned to Princeton from a sabbatical in Pasadena, and later that year struck up a friendship with Einstein's then newly arrived assistant Infeld.
Robertson observed that the singularity could be dealt with by a change of coordinates, an approach that revealed that Einstein and Rosen were dealing with a solution representing cylindrical waves.
He had not yet spoken to Robertson and discovered the way out of his difficulty, and so was obliged to lecture on the invalidity of his own proof.

In 1903, he suggested the existence of an effect of the Sun's radiation that causes small particles orbiting the Sun to gradually approach it and eventually plunge in.
This idea was later developed by US physicist Howard Percy Robertson (1903–1961) and is now known as the Poynting–Robertson effect.
Poynting also devised a method for measuring the radiation pressure from a body; his method can be used to determine the absolute temperature of celestial objects.

But in 1936 Einstein and Rosen submitted a paper on the existence of gravitational waves that struck Tate as suspicious, and he decided to send it to the referee.
Soon after the initial formulation of general relativity, Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves by doing the obvious thing — examining the behavior of small fluctuations in the gravitational field using perturbation theory.
Robertson figured out that they had made a classic error in GR — essentially, they had used a bad coordinate system.
