'George Gershwin: His Life and Work' by Howard Pollack   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The "selected bibliography" at the end of Howard Pollack's new biography runs to eight pages, but it's hard to imagine that any previous study has been as thorough or as painstakingly researched and documented as this one.
That is not to say that Pollack's work is the most compelling or readable.
Pollack has the most information, although not necessarily the most biographical information, nor the deepest insights into Gershwin's character.

Classical Net Review - Aaron Copland: The Life And Work Of An Uncommon Man
Pollack's previously published writing includes Harvard Composers: Walter Piston And His Students, From Elliott Carter To Frederic Rzewski (which has a full chapter on Shapero's Symphony for Classical Orchestra, by the way) and Skyscraper Lullaby: The Life And Music Of John Alden Carpenter.
Typically, Pollack writes about the origin of each work and gives a summary of positive and negative ctiticisms it occasioned, as well as perfomance and recording history, in some cases, in addition to his reading of the harmonic, rhythmic, contrapuntal and instrumental elements of the work.
After that, Pollack writes what almost might be called biographical essays on various themes, which he carries through, narratively, as long as he needs to, chronologically.

Pollack's lively narrative describes Gershwin's family, childhood, and education; his early career as a pianist; his friendships and romantic life; his relation to various musical trends; his writings on music; his working methods; and his tragic death at the age of 38.
Pollack concludes with an exploration of the performances and critical reception of Gershwin's music over the years, from his time to ours.

Howard Pollack subtitles his superb biography of Copland "The Life and Work of an Uncommon Man," hinting at ironies explored in the book in a sober and judicious manner that mirrors Copland's own public stance.
Pollack, dealt with this encounter with his characteristic outward aplomb - giving the committee nothing, but never overtly challenging their inquisitional project - and yet it might be argued that Copland never found his artistic balance afterwards.
Pollack, a historian of American music at the University of Houston, has therefore been able to tell many of the stories that Copland left out.

Fascinating schism - The Boston Globe
Yet many readers who might profit from Pollack's insights will be daunted by the sheer bulk of his book, which is not for the faint of heart or thin of wrist.
The life that occupies the first quarter is organized not sequentially but thematically under headings such as "Gershwin and His Family" and "Working Methods." Disregarding chronology obscures Gershwin's development as a person, while separating the life from the work makes it difficult to trace his development as an artist.
Pollack's structure also creates redundancies that recall the eternally rewinding film "Groundhog Day." Gershwin dies in the preface and yet again in Chapters 1, 6, 11, and elsewhere.

Pollack's book is, for one, the first Gershwin bio that takes advantage of the discovery of mountains of original orchestra parts for Golden Age musical theatre scores in a Secaucus warehouse in the early eighties.
Pollack's sleuthing and interviews conclusively demonstrate that these evaluations were incorrect: Gershwin pursued serious musical training throughout his life, it shows in his work, and socially, he was a beloved, charming person who was deeply mourned at his death.
Pollack briefly addresses objections to that thesis from some quarters since Peyser's book was published -- but, in my view, neglects the rather damning facts that 1) said love child looks exactly like Gershwin and 2)was supported in his claim to have made regular visits to Gershwin's apartment by none other than Gershwin's valet.
