They take their name from the noble Howard family who probably owned large areas of the hills and whose magnificent seat, Castle Howard lies at the fringe of the hills.

The Howardian Hills form a distinctive, roughly rectangular area of well-wooded undulating countryside rising, sometimes sharply, between the flat agricultural plains of Pickering and York.
Jurassic limestone gives the landscape its character and in effect, the irregular 180m ridges of the Howardian Hills are a southern extension of the rocks of the North York Moors.
On the eastern edge, the river Derwent cuts through the Hills in the Kirkham Gorge, a deep winding valley which was formed as an overflow channel from glacial Lake Pickering.

 Losing the way
THE Howardian Hills are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
It was a lovely evening, we watched hundreds of masonry bees excavating the soft sandstone of a gable end, chortled at a dollop of doggerel on the subject of dog dirt and strode off down a dead-end lane.
We dropped down from Mowthorpe Hill on to the flats and immediately settled into the grass to watch a barn owl hunting; this cost us a precious half an hour of daylight.

We turned off the single street and on to a farm lane and watched a display of potato harvesting with two blue Ford tractors side by side, one pulling the red harvester and the other pulling the trailer for the spuds.
This is the third walk we have done recently in the well-funded Howardian Hills AONB and all have seemed as tricky as any other North Yorkshire farmland.

 Some Recommended Cycling Routes around York
To the north of the Vale of York are the Howardian Hills - these are mostly wooded and climb to 600 feet.
From Fulford to Crockey Hill, avoid the two and a half miles of A19 and its new roundabouts at the bypass by taking either the Naburn road or a bridleway out the bottom of Fulford village, both of which have flyovers of the bypass.
Castle Howard, in the Howardian Hills, is an obvious choice of destination (it was the chosen set for several TV dramas including Brideshead Revisited), but a good route to there by bike may not be so obvious.

GEORGE Wilkinson has tweaked some small part of his left foot, and for a week or two will be walking no further than the freezer for his therapeutic frozen peas.
Well not to the wilds exactly, but to Ganthorpe which is a very civilised village in the Howardian Hills, and is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
This was nicer than its name, and was followed by a pleasant skirt round Moor Hill where I crossed paths with a group of nine out from York, who looked, like me, to be enjoying themselves.
