In English usage a minster is a grand type of church; the term may be extended to apply to a cathedral, such as York Minster.
Thus minster originally applied to the church of a monastery or a chapter: it was an abbot who presided in the minster, rather than a bishop, as at a cathedral.

The word is derived from Latin monasterium and was used for the church belonging to a (The residence of a religious community) monastery or a (A local branch of some fraternity or association) chapter.
In the case of the (additional info and facts about Ulm Münster) Ulm Münster in (A republic in central Europe; split into East German and West Germany after World War II and reunited in 1990) Germany, it was used for a particularly prosperous parish church boasting a plethora of clergy.

There is story that tells us that in the church at Hoveden (Howden) is the tomb of St. Osana, sister of King Osred King of Northumbria, who reigned in the eighth century.
In 1080 William the Conqueror gave the the church and manor of Howden (Hoveden), with all its income to his friend William de Carilef, whom he had just appointed Bishop of Durham, William de Carilef in turn gave the church to the Prior and Convent of Durham retaining the Manor for the himself.
The Chapter-house was described in the booklet The Minster of St. Peter Howden by Thomas Basil King in 1955 as follows; 1955 is a common year starting on Saturday.

One of the last public service job carried out by in-mates of HM Prison The Wolds before the closure of the metalwork training facility was the restoration of Howden Minster's ancient weather vanes.
The work which involved a complete remodelling to the wasted wrought iron work has now been completed, and all that remains is for the vanes to be reinstalled on the Minster Lantern Tower.
The cost of this work has been estimated to be in the region of £750.00 and efforts are now been made to raise the necessary funds.
