Howletts Zoo was set up as a private zoo in 1956 by John Aspinall in Canterbury, Kent.
It was expanded into Port Lympne Zoo in 1973, and opened to the public in 1975.

A western lowland gorilla born at the Cincinnati Zoo is the 46th gorilla to be born there, officials said Wednesday.
It was the second baby for the mother, Muke, a resident of the Cincinnati Zoo since her birth there in 1981.
Muke and her newest baby are being kept out of the zoo's gorilla exhibit because the weather has been chilly lately, officials said.

Under the Zoo Licensing Act 1981, local authorities are not permitted to attach a licence condition which relates only or primarily to the health, safety or welfare of persons working in a zoo, as this is dealt with under separate health and safety legislation.

The 5 1/2 year female, Regina, daughter of the breeding pair has been sent to Taronga zoo where she will be matched with a male from the UK.
The male of the original pair died on the 19th Dec 1984 while the female died on the 31st Oct 1994.The second pair of gibbon arrived at the zoo in August 1992 and have established themselves as a successful breeding pair.
The new pair are a male born at Berlin Zoo on the 17th July 1986, Jury and female Hecla born 21st July 1983.

JOHN ASPINALL, the owner of Howletts Zoo where three keepers have been killed by tigers, won a High Court action yesterday to allow his keepers to continue entering the enclosures where the tigers roam freely.
A judge ruled against Canterbury city council which had sought an order that staff should be allowed to enter enclosures at Howletts containing only tigers which were either very young or had been immobilised.
But Mr Justice Turner said that there was nothing in law which forbade the zoo's activities and held that the tribunal had acted correctly.
