In an official audit released yesterday, the newspaper industry's circulation watchdog placed Hoy's sales in 2003 at 49,681 copies on weekdays and 25,465 on Sunday, substantially lower than was reported a year ago.
The audit also showed the unaudited reports submitted by Hoy for the 12-month period ended September 2003 had vastly inflated the number of copies delivered to home subscribers and those provided to schools through the "Newspapers in Education" program.
ABC executives have told Hoy that they expect to complete by early next year the audits of the paper's circulation for the six months ended in March and the 12 months ended in September.
