The world community was first alerted to Icelandic cinema when the films Land og synir (Land and Sons), directed by Ágúst Guðmundsson, and Óðal feðranna (Father’s Estate), directed by Hrafn Gunnlaugsson, were screened at foreign film festivals in the early 1990s.
The most famous Icelandic directors are Hrafn Gunnlaugsson, Friðrik Þór Friðriksson and Baltasar Kormákur.
Hrafn became known for his Viking movies, the films Hrafninn flýgur (1984, When the Raven Flies) and Í skugga hrafnsins (1988, In the Shadow of the Raven).

IN DIRECTOR Hrafn Gunnlaugsson's 1988 film, I Skugga Hrafnsins [In the Shadow of the Raven], conversion to Christianity, despite the promise of spiritual salvation and national unification, is inherently a competition for social dominance.
In the opening sequence, Gunnlaugsson juxtaposes midshots of the boat's passengers with voice-over long shots of the troubled boat to introduce three of the four sources of dramatic tension that will occupy the film--religion, environment, settlement--to which romance will later be added.
Gunnlaugsson's refusal to shy away from the unpleasantries of early Icelandic settlements, however, reminds modern viewers that social and political change is rarely without cost, despite some historians' tendency to romanticize national origin.

Review/Film; A Spiritual Journey To Medieval Iceland - New York Times
In the world of Hrafn Gunnlaugsson's medieval adventure film, "The Shadow of the Raven," emotions are as jagged and windblown as the spectacular Icelandic coastline where the movie was shot.
Gunnlaugsson's characters tend to communicate very tersely, and there is a lot of glaring and primal grunting that at moments borders on the silly.
Reine Brynolfsson projects Trausti's faith by widening his eyes and peering solemnly into the eyes of everyone he encounters, but his portrayal is so lacking in inner fire that he is finally unconvincing as an invincible hero of truth, justice and the newly Christianized Nordic way.

The priority of conflicting claims — the pagan heroic code of vengeance, familial obligation, and fate versus Christian mercy, obligation to God, and individual will — is traced against a backdrop of claims of national identity versus the monolithic blurring of boundaries demanded by the dominance of the Church.

Although documentaries were shot with some regularity on Iceland, the feature film “industry” began only in the early months of 1980, when two releases galvanized the local public.
Ágúst Gudmundsson’s Land and Sons, and Hrafn Gunnlaugsson’s Father’s Estate marked the debut of very different personalities, yet were linked by a common theme: the relationship between a young man and his family -—his quest for a new life, away from the agrarian grind.
Gunnlaugsson’s When the Raven Flies (1984) and In the Shadow of the Raven (1988) brought medieval Iceland to life with stunning sorcery, mingling elements of the Hollywood Western, the Japanese samurai epic, and of course the Icelandic saga, to create stories of betrayal and revenge in a period when life was nasty, brutish, and short.
