The waterfall Hraunfossar is one of Icelands most precious pearls of nature.
It is in the land of Gilsbakki at the edge of Hallmundarhraun - the lava of Hallmundur - and to visit the waterfall you take road 518 - Hálsasveitarvegur - on the south bank of Hvítá.
The cascades are close to the highway but are not to be seen until you come to the riverbank.

Sitting in this huge off-road vehicle, we soon left the roads for what they were and our driver took us over steep hills and through rivers.
We visited Þingvellir and the waterfalls Hraunfossar (100-year old water flowing from under the lava, beautiful sight) and Barnafoss (very powerful).
Our driver wasn´t really a guide but still able to tell us some bits and pieces about the things we were seeing; I liked his story about the Virgin Mountain...

Destinations: Glymur, the highest waterfall in iceland, Hraunfossar, where water seeps out underneath a lavabed, making one of the widest waterfalls I've seen, and Bjarnafoss, just upstream, a waterfall from legends.
