Many critics have implied that this shift in the film's texture, affording Hristo Naumov Shopov the film's one opportunity for an actual performance (it's fine, but no great shakes), creates an empathetic connection to Pilate that is missing from the other characterizations, particularly those of the Pharisees.
I could probably be swayed further in the direction of praise or distrust, but before that happens, I'll have to hear more targeted and convincing responses to the movie it is, rather than the movie it could have been, or was rumored to have been, or is imagined by its director to be.

TheMovieBoy Review - Passion Of The Christ, The (2004)
Although the hubbub has been notable on a historical level and single-handedly turned this foreign-language art film into a box-office record-breaker (independently made and financed for $30-million by Mel Gibson, it almost made back the entire budget on opening day), it also turns out to be subjectively unfounded.
Captured while seeking guidance from his Father in the garden of Gethesemane, Jesus is feared by the self-righteous Pharisees, who are threatened by his claim that he is the Messiah.
Roman emperor Pontius Pilate (Hristo Naumov Shopov) is torn.

The Passion of the Christ (2004)
Right now I am already feeling for the church groups that will be rushing to see this film out of duty.
Bulgarian actor Hristo Naumov Shopov has an excellent, strong face that could convey a thousand words to his wife with one troubled glance.
He's a man caught between a rock and a hard place, and is the only actor in the film who makes an impression, Jim Caviezel's deep amber eyes notwithstanding.

Passion of the Christ VHS video
Directed by Mel Gibson --who funded the film himself and co-wrote the screenplay--PASSION uses flashbacks to substantiate a handful of pertinent moments in Jesus' life and teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount and the Last Supper, as well as his relationships with his mother and his disciples.
Still, the drama focuses on the seemingly endless torture inflicted upon Jesus by Roman soldiers at the urging of the Jewish crowd that considers him a blasphemer, despite the attempts of a sympathetic Pontius Pilate (Hristo Naumov Shopov) to spare him from death.
Maia Morgenstern, Monica Bellucci, and Hristo Jivkov are touching as Mary, Magdalene, and John respectively, who are devastated by Jesus' fate yet aware that they can do nothing to change it.

I wish I could report that it was all hype and bluster—any movie deserves better than to be prejudged sight unseen.
Many of the secondary characters have compelling story arcs, most notably the spineless Roman governor Pontius Pilate (Hristo Naumov Shopov), who marches grimly toward his inevitable non-decision.

 The Lashing of the Christ
It is so single-minded in its narrative focus that traditional notions of story and development are all but ignored.
With the exception of Pilate (Hristo Naumov Shopov), the characters have little to nothing in the way of nuance or development, and that includes the central figure of Christ himself.
Some show this flaw less than others -- Maia Morgenstern adds a much needed emotional heft in her scenes as Christ's mother Mary -- but the overall effect is less one of watching characters develop and grow than of watching them go through their paces.

Played by Hristo Naumov Shopov, Pilate's role in the film is to represent humanity's pursuit of truth.
A more accurate observation would be to note that the film's depiction of Pilate mirrors the Gospel according to St. John verbatim.
He taps into the character with impeccable skill, bringing forth Pilate's moral confusion in order to speak volumes about the plight of so many people who have been washed away in a world of relativism.

When Jesus (James Caviezel) first appears before Pontius Pilate (Hristo Naumov Shopov) in The Passion of the Christ, they engage in a bit of conversation concerning the nature of truth.
It opens in the Garden of Gethsemane, where he is first tempted by Satan (Rosalinda Celentano), then arrested and dragged off to Jerusalem for his mock trial and torture by Roman soldiers.
Occasional flashbacks attributed to Jesus show him with disciples (in particular John of Zebedee [Hristo Jivkov], Peter [Francesco De Vito], and Judas Iscariot [Luca Lionello]) and Mary, in which he asserts his love for them, as well as knowledge of his fate.

The gore will be much easier to take on the small screen - and without that being quite so overwhelming, the clarity of the inadvertent message of tolerance might just ring through more soundly for those who aren't knee-jerked reactionaries like the countless villains in the movie.
The film's most riveting scenes are those in which Caviezel stands before Hristo Naumov Shopov (as Pilate) and Mattia Sbragia (as Caiphas, the High Priest who demands Jesus be crucified) bloodied and in chains, defying them and pronouncing his faith.

 The Review - Cross purposes
Jewish venom towards Jesus is more than a passing notion; indeed, it seems to be one central focus of the movie.
In contrast, despite the historical record, Roman governor of Jerusalem Pontius Pilate (Hristo Naumov Shopov) is portrayed as a basically good man caught between the proverbial rock-and-a-hard-place.
Pilate repeatedly exonerates Jesus of any wrongdoing and tries several times to convince the Jewish mob not to crucify him.

Only Pilate (Hristo Naumov Shopov) shows some semblance of humanity, partly because the film manages to show, however brief, how his mind works.

"What is truth?" asks Pontius Pilate (Hristo Naumov Shopov), and later he expands with his saintlike wife Claudia (Claudia Gerini) upon the problems raised by this question, as though it were a serious philosophical conundrum with which he struggles rather than just the flippantly cynical quip it seemed to be in the New Testament.
There is even, in this spirit of authentication, a (probably not intentionally) funny scene where a cloth used to wipe Jesus' bloody face is revealed to be the Turin shroud.
