Charles gave Hrolf the title of Duke and granted him and his followers possession of Normandy.
In return, Hrolf swore fealty to Charles, converted to Christianity, and undertook to defend the northern region of France against the incursions of other Viking groups.
The results were, in a historical sense, rather ironic: several generations later, the Norman descendants of these Viking settlers not only identified themselves as French, but carried the French language and culture into England in 1066, after the Norman Conquest of England.

Rollo was the Frankish - Latin name taken by (probably) Hrolf Ganger (Hrolf the Walker, or Gånge Rolf).
However, thelatinization Rollo has in no known instance been applied to a Hrolf, and in the texts which speak of him, numerous latinizedHrolfs are included.
Concluding the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte (911) with the Frenchking Charles the Simple, Rollo pledged feudal allegiance to the king, changed his name to the Frankish version, and converted to Christianity, probably with the baptismal name Robert.

Rollo the Walker and Relatives - The Gold Scales
The saga writer Snorre mentions that the giant Rolv Ganger - later called Rollo and hailed as one adamant ancestor of the British royal house - grew so big that viking horses were unable to carry him.
Rolf Ganger went afterwards over sea to the West to the Hebrides, or Sudreys; and at last farther west to Valland, where he plundered and subdued for himself a great earldom, which he peopled with Northmen, from which that land is called Normandy.
Rolf Ganger's son was William, father to Richard, and grandfather to another Richard, who was the father of Robert Longspear, and grandfather of William the Bastard, from whom all the following English kings are descended.

 The Sinclair Lineage
He was the direct descendant of Hrolf ‘the Ganger’ who was granted the Duchy of Normandy, by King Charles ‘the Simple’ of France, by a Treaty signed at Castle St Clair-sur-Epte in 911 AD and from which place the Sinclairs (St Clairs) take their name.
Hrolf or Rollo, as the French knew him, was the eldest son of Rogenwald ‘the Mighty’ so we have the descendants of two brothers, uniting in the offspring of that marriage.
The first child to be born in 1345 was none other than Prince Henry Sinclair who, as we have said before, followed in the wake of his Viking ancestors by voyaging to the New World in 1398.

 Origins of Clan Sinclair
Charles 'the Simple' of France offered Hrolf 'the Ganger' the Province of Neustria and his daughter Gizelle in marriage if Hrolf (known as Rollo in France) would cease his raiding of the French coast.
Hrolf soon added Brittany and the Channel Islands to his Duchy.
His marriage to Gizelle was childless so all subsequent Dukes of Normandy (and St Clairs) are descended from Hrolf's first wife, Popa, the daughter of Count Berenger of Bayeux.

I personally favor the Anglicized-Scandanavian version - Hrolf Ganger or Hrolf the Walker, whichever - because Rollo is ambiguous with other persons.
I haven't seen "Rollo the Gangler" in any of my references, but it could certainly be added to the many variants on this name.
"Rollo is thought to have been Norwegian rather than Danish, and later Icelandic sources identify him with Hrolf the Ganger (Walker), son of Ragnvald Earl of Moer, who had a career as a Viking before settling in Francia....

Under the leadership of Hrolf Ganger, who adopted the French name Rollo, they swore allegiance to the king ofFrance (Charles the Simple) and received the small and lowerSeine area from him in 911 which they later expanded to become the Duchy of Normandy.
The Norman people adopted Christianity and the French language and created a new cultural identity separate from that of theirScandinavian forebears and French neighbours.
