King Hrolf Kraki - Introduction - About the Saga   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Called Kraki (tall, angular and slender like a pole ladder), Hrolf was widely remembered in the medieval North as one of the most magnificent kings of "ancient times," and the saga draws on a long oral tradition as it describes Hrolf's often treacherous family and recounts the exploits of his famous champions.
Hrolf's Saga, which was written in prose in fourteenth-century Iceland, has close affinities with the Old English verse epic Beowulf, written sometime in the period from the eighth to the early eleventh centuries.
Hrolf's Saga devotes a significant share of the narrative to the destiny of female characters, and a significant feature of the text is that important events turn on decisions made by women.

The Saga Of King Hrolf Kraki - Anonymous - Penguin Classics
Composed in medieval Iceland, Hrolf’s Saga recalls ancient Scandinavia of the Migration Period, when the warrior chieftain King Hrolf ruled in Denmark.
Combining heroic legend, myth and magic, Hrolf’s Saga is full of wizards, sorceresses, and ‘berserker’ fighters, originally members of a cult of Odin.
Most startling is the central love triangle: Hrolf’s father, a man of insatiable appetites, unknowingly abducts his daughter, who later marries the despised sorcerer, King Adils of Sweden.

HROLF KRAKI'S SAGA (Poul Anderson)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Hrolf was a sort of Arthurian equivalent of the northern folk tales and myths, but Anderson brought him to life in this novelized retelling of his exploits.
This story is a dark, fatalistic and ultimately moving retelling of the legend of the Scandinavian king, Hrolf Kraki.
But Hrolf is star-crossed, the product of an unfortunate liaison between unhappy lovers (he is both son and brother to his mother) and scion of a family of violent and bloody strivers, a hero who, in the end, must defend all he has against the predations of his kin.

Eadgils (Beowulf), Adils the Great, or Athisl (Saxo Grammaticus) (all forms are based an older Aðgils, the Anglo-Saxon form is not etymologically identical but it was the only corresponding name used by the Anglo-Saxons) was a Swedish king of the house of Scylfings.
Eadgils figures in several sources which suggests that they are based on real events in which a civil war erupted in Sweden between Eadgils and his uncle Onela, which Eadgils won by hiring outside assistance.
Hrólf sent his twelve companions, led by Bödvar Bjarki (the counterpart of Beowulf in Scandinavian sources), Onela was defeated and Eadgils gained the kingdom.

Literary Encyclopedia: Hrólfs saga kraka [The Saga of King Hrólf Kraki]
Hrólfs saga kraka, the Saga of King Hrólf kraki, is a colourful and dramatic prose account of legendary events in and around Denmark that was composed in Iceland in the later Middle Ages.
On the basis of comparison with these and other texts the events of the saga may be dated to the late fifth and the sixth centuries, but a long oral tradition precedes the composition of the written saga and during that period any historical kernel there may once have been has been much embellished.
Although Hrólfr is not involved in all the action (and is not even born until well in to the saga) the narrative always involves characters who are either his blood-relatives or members of his band of warriors.

There are so many similarities between the hero of the poem Beowulf and The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki, an Iceland saga representing 1000 years of oral traditions prior to the 1300’s when it was written, that these similarities cannot be attributed solely to coincidence.
The Cambridge History of English and American Literature states that the hero of the poem, Beowulf himself, may be the same person as Bodvar Biarki, the chief of Hrolfr Kraki’s knights (v1, ch3, s3, n13).
In The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki, Bodvar is the grandson of a king (Hring); in Beowulf the hero is the grandson of a king (Hrethel).
