Warhammer 40,000 (informally known as Warhammer 40K or just 40K) is a science fiction tabletop miniature wargame, produced by the British gaming company Games Workshop.
Warhammer 40K is the science fiction companion to Warhammer Fantasy.
The central and most popular elements of the Warhammer 40k universe are the Space Marines, futuristic versions of fantasy knights and the finest warriors of the Imperium of Mankind, a dystopian and degenerate galaxy-spanning civilization.

The Hrud in the Warhammer 40,000 universe are a race of spacefaring rodents roughly the equivelent to space Skaven.
More recent fluff released has given the concept that the hrud are based off the Jawas and Tusken Raiders raiders from that of Star Wars because they are supposed to have originally come from a desert world and that they are small and shadowy looking creatures who drape themselves in rags and cloaks.
There is speculation that they may return as adversaries of the Alien Hunters (Warhammer 40,000) when their Codex is released.

 Hrud - Lexicanum
The Hrud are a race of bipeds, first introduced to the Warhammer 40,000 universe in 3rd Edition Rulebook.
The Hrud race seems to have appeared relatively speaking out of no where; term 'Hrud' has little or no meaning outside of its use in the game and there is little or no information about this race that can be used to trace the origin of their idea.
Observing a Hrud is often difficult even within a well light room due to a distortion field of unknown origin emanating from the Hrud that prevents the eye from focusing on it.

 Relic Forums - The Hrud/Skaven
The Hrud are (as far as we know) sentient and, although a minor race in Warhammer 40,000, do actually enjoy fairly high connections - the "Watchers in the Dark" that accompany the Dark Angels (one of them is Azrael's helmet-bearer in the tabletop model) are actually Hrud.
Hrud are also apparently potently psychic, to the extent that they seem to be absolutely impervious to all sorts of physical attack (this is mentioned with specific reference to Azrael's helmet-bearer, so I'm not sure whether this is a racial trait or just an ability endowed on the one individual).
There is one reference to the Imperium coming into conflict with the Hrud - the 592-602.M41 crusade on Faseene, where the Kashann Rough Riders served with distinction in the pursuit of partisan Hrud, allowing the main Guard formations to demolish their warrens.

Hrud - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first chronological reference to the Hrud is near the end of the Great Crusade, when the Iron Warriors Legion is noted for "cleansing the Hrud Warrens on Gugann" just prior to the Horus Heresy.
Whereas Skaven are a large unified empire, are intent on dominance and destruction of other species, and have reflections of the four aspects of Chaos in their clans, the Hrud are scattered and disconnected, do not gather in clans, and seem to be benevolent at best and pests at worse.
From this it seems that the Hrud may be allies of the Eldar and perhaps another creation of the Old Ones.

 Games - Hrud
More recent material has asserted that the Hrud are based on the Jawas and Tusken Raiders from Star Wars because they are supposed to have originally come from a desert world and they are small and shadowy-looking creatures who drape themselves in rags and cloaks.
One Other, although unlikeley bit of speculation is that the Hrud are meant to be Warhammer 40,000s equivalent of the Skaven, as they seem to share many charicteristics inherent to the underworld dwelling rat men that appear as a fully playable army in Warhammer Fantasy Battles.
However, it should be noted that this portrayal is clearly marked as 'speculative', and the images of the Hrud dissection do not include any portrayal of the creatures skin, which rapidly decays after death.

There are several new aliens described (Umbra), in depth information on races only alluded to before (Hrud), and comprehensive summaries verifying information on races already well developed (including insight into the roles and motivations of all four types of Eldar).
Most importantly, connections are drawn between each case study that point to the role the Slaan and C'tan play in the fate of all the races of the galaxy, as first suggested in Codex: Necrons.

However, this is not the impression given in Liber Chaotica and other sources, which seems to suggest that Khaine and company were in fact warp entities, hence why at the birth of Slaanesh they were all consumed or subsumed.

At the moment I’m working on a World War II Fallschirmjaeger force, that’ll be used in either Warhammer Panzer Battles, or the new Flames of War system.
What we do is manipulate common archetypes, and you’ll often find Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 using the same archetypes, and that may be the only link intended.
A good example is the seeding of races such as the Demiurg or Hrud, which can be expanded in other games systems such as BFG or Inquisitor.

I was going to post this to the warhammer 40 k forum, but decided that it would be better appreciated here.
Running a warhammer 40k game using the roleplaying system isn't about playing space marines [though i admit they are the most prominent feature in the universe], its about mankind's struggle against chaos [it was what the emperor was fighting before he "died"]
The essense of making a warhammer 40k roleplaying game will need to be in its name [kind of like how "inquisitor" did].

For those not in the know, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay has a system where you start in one career, collect all the abilities the career grants (known collectively as ‘advances’) and then move onto another career and work towards completing that one.
While this is fine for the gritty medieval world of Warhammer, this sort of social progress doesn’t really work for 40k.
If you don’t like those themes, then a Warhammer 40,000 roleplaying game isn’t going to be for you.
