Thursday, March 2, 2000; 1:24 PM Veteran Democratic fund-raiser Maria Hsia, a key figure in the Justice Department's campaign finance investigation, was convicted today on federal charges that she helped disguise more than $100,000 in illegal campaign contributions, including one count involving Vice President Gore's controversial appearance at a Buddhist temple.
Hsia, a Los Angeles-based immigration consultant and longtime friend of Gore's, was one of the chief targets of the Justice Department's investigation into alleged Democratic fund-raising abuses during the 1996 election.
Hsia, 48, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Taiwan, was convicted of five charges of causing false statements to be made to the Federal Election Commission.
