HsuYun was born on April 26th in Fukien, in Imperial China.
When he was nineteen, HsuYun fled with his cousin Fu Kuo to Kushan monastery at Fuchow.
HsuYun was one of the most influential Ch'an masters of the past two centuries, and arguably the most important in modern Chinese history.

An excellent example of modern Ch'anBuddhism is seen in the recent life of HsuYun who lived from 1839 to 1959.
It is note worthy that Hsu-Yun was a life long vegetarian and gardener and was active and alert until the ripe old age of 120 - a fitting testimony to the worthiness of the vegan diet and monastic lifestyle.
HsuYun rebuilt some Chinese monasteries, and was able to live the life of a monk for over a century.
In 1946, because he esteemed the Elder Master HsuYun as a great hero of Buddhism, the Master quickly packed his belongings and set out on his way to pay homage to him.
In 1948 he reached Nanhua Monastery at Caoxi of Guangzhou, where he paid homage to Elder Master HsuYun and was assigned to be an instructor in the Nanhua Monastery Vinaya Academy.
The Elder Master HsuYun saw that the Master was an outstanding individual in Buddhism and transmitted the Dharma lineage to him, giving him the Dharma name Hsuan Hua and making him the Ninth Patriarch of the Wei Yang Sect, the forty-fifth generation since the First Patriarch Mahakashyapa.
Xu Yun would not die until he was ready to die, until he accomplished the tasks which he had set for himself.
To be in Xu Yun's presence was to be in the morning mist of a sunny day, or in one of those clouds that linger at the top of a mountain.
But Xu Yun believed that all children, rich or poor, deserved to be educated and so poor children were permitted to attend this fine school without cost of any kind.

The Master believed Pure Land to be equally effective as Chan as a method of self cultivation.

A native of Pingtung, Taiwan, Republic of China, Yun-Ling Hsu joined the music faculty at the University of Central Florida in the fall of 2005.
At Ohio State, Dr. Hsu was privileged to have been one of the pupils of the world-renowned concert pianist Earl Wild, himself studying with Egen Petri, a former pupil of Ferruccio Busoni; Paul Doguereau, a pupil of Paderewski and Ravel; and also studying with Selmar Jasen, a descendant pupil of Eugene d'Albert and Liszt.
In the year of 2000, she received her DMA degree with a doctoral dissertation on the transcriptions of Earl Wild for solo piano of Gershwin songs.
