While official discourse suspects the loyalty of the huaqiao (are they profiteers or patriots?), it also sees them as a kind of offshore stored memory in that they are understood to embody the pre-Communist traditions that are important to the market changes taking place in the nation.
Both the huaqiao and official (Asian) state discourse help promulgate a sojourner discourse, as Ong shows when she says that Lee Kuan Yew implies that “although ethnic Chinese have lived among other cultural groups, they have remained ‘Chinese’ in a basic, unchanging way” (68).
For example, what’s missing from her account of white American resistance to the “monster homes” of some of the huaqiao is the anxiety in the white middle class that they won’t be able to pass on their status as home-owners to their children.

Session 143   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
James Cook’s paper on Huaqiao leadership in Fujian describes how a network of successful Chinese merchants translated their experiences in colonial Southeast Asia into local development strategies for their home province, fashioning a Minnan identity that at crucial moments (the 1933 Fujian Rebellion for instance) proved to be in tension with other national agendas.
Using a discursive analysis of the writings of the Beijing intellectual Tang Erhe as her point of departure, Rebecca Karl asserts that we cannot understand republican era constructions of the Chinese nation without first passing through an analysis of the effects of colonialism on Chinese intellectuals’ worldviews.
This paper will argue that, historically and philosophically, it is impossible to speak of either "race" or a "national people" as significant categories of socio-political praxis in modern China without hitching both to the emergence of a discourse of colonialism.
