A die that has "warped" in some way, possibly from excess clashing, and that produces coins which are slightly "bent." This may be more apparent on one side and occasionally apparent only on one side.
By the 1840's, when dies were made by hubbing and therefore were more uniform, die varieties resulted mainly from variances in the size, shape, and positioning of the date and mintmark.
The hub is produced with the aid of a portrait lathe or reducing machine and bears a "positive" image of the coin's design — that is, it shows the design as it will appear on the coin itself.
