Hub gear - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hub gears are used mostly on utility bikes and various types of small wheeled bicycle, such as folding bikes.
Hub gears work by internal planetary or epicyclic gearing, which means that the outer case of the hub gear unit (which is attached to the spokes) is made to turn at a different speed relative to the rear wheel's sprocket depending on which gear is selected.
Unlike derailleur gears, where the gears and mechanism are exposed to the elements, hub gears are enclosed within the hub of the bicycle's rear wheel.

 Hub gears
Hub gears are less common than derailleur gears which are the dominant gear system on most modern bicycles.
Hub gears work by internal planetary or epicyclic gearing, which means that the outer case of the hub gear unit (which is attached to the spokes) is made to turn at a different speed to the rear wheel's axle depending on which gear is selected.
Hub gears were invented in 1903 by an English company called Sturmey Archer[?], and by the 1930s they had become common on bikes across the world.

Epicyclic gearing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Epicyclic gearing or planetary gearing is a gear system that consists of one or more outer gears, or planet gears, rotating about a central, or sun gear.
The gear ratio in an epicyclic gearing system is somewhat non-intuitive, particularly because there are several ways in which an input rotation can be converted into an output rotation.
For instance, if the sun gear has 24 teeth, and each planet has 16 teeth, then the ratio is -24/16, or -3/2; this means that one clockwise turn of the sun gear produces 1.5 counterclockwise turns of the planet gears.

velorution » All about hub gears
Hub gears have been providing reliable service to cyclists since the original 3 speed model was invented and first produced by Sturmey-Archer in 1901.
Hub gears have a transmission system inside the hub that provide between 3 and 14 gears, while on the outside the chain drives a single sprocket.
Their hubs are also better sealed than for Sturmey Archer or Sram gears, but they are slightly less efficient, and there have been issues with the availability of spares in the UK.

Modifications to Sturmey Archer Hub Gears
The final low gear position must ensure that the sliding sun wheels are fully moved to the right to lock the right hand sun wheel to the axle.
This low gear position appears to be a driving position but the sliding sun wheels are not fully locked and the gear is very liable to slip.
When changing into the lowest gear it is necessary for the pedals and/or the wheel to be slowly revolving to bring the sun wheels into line with the fixed parts that lock them.

Whereas all the other hub gears I have seen use small gears, made from powdered metal, the Rohloff gears are machined from solid alloy steel, and are about twice the size, thus they are about 4 times as strong.
The hub steel and main cage are aluminium, the pinion axles are hollow, and a number of parts are carbon fibre.
The hub was checked a number times, at each step in the assembly, and then EVERY hub was tested on a bench test to make sure that each of the 14 gears worked correctly.

Rohloff, Shimano, SRAM/Sachs and Sturmey-Archer Internal Gear Bicycle Hubs
In the late 1990's, internal gears are undergoing something of a renaissance, with the development of wide range 7-speed hubs.
This hub has even 13.6% steps between each of the 14 gears - the ratios are, according to the handbook:- 0.279, 0.316, 0.36, 0.409, 0.464, 0.528, 0.6, 0.682, 0.774, 0.881, 1, 1.135, 1.292, 1.467.
I find the range of gears quite pleasant to use, and the efficiency of the hub doesn't appear to be any worse than the Sturmey-Archer FM four-speed unit it replaced.

On the right side of the hub, just outboard of the sprocket, there is a "cassette joint pulley" which the cable moves back and forth as the gears are changed.
Both the pulley and the bracket have red index marks, and gear adjustment is correct when the marks on the two parts align with the shifter in 4th gear.
This procedure is the same for the Nexus 4-, 7- and 8-speed hubs, using 4th gear as the reference in all cases.

 Bike gears: technology
Hub gears use some very clever internal mechanisms to change the gear ratio between the sprocket and the wheel.
Nowadays, SRAM/Sachs, Rohloff and Shimano have joined the fray with hubs with more than ten ratios [cutaway image of the Rohloff 14-speed hub gear].
Hub gears have the advantage of being enclosed, without all of the exposed dangling mechanisms of the derailleur.

CTC - the UK's national cyclists organisation
The common sort of "internal gear" is a hub-gear: a compact multi-speed gearbox with all its moving parts and lubricant enclosed and protected from dirt by the rear hub shell.
When other gears are engaged however, those tiny internal cogs rotate under load and a small amount of motive power is lost in friction.
Internal Gear Ratios is a page of instructions and tables of data for working out how many gear inches (or metres development) you'll actually get from that hub or bottom-bracket gear.

Gears (particularly bevel gears) exhibit high frictional losses under such conditions and in tests a bicycle shaft drive was found 8% less efficient than a clean well lubricated chain transmission, or about on a par with a worn-out, dry and dirty one!
In general, gear controls attach to the hub via quick release fittings, so that the wheel can be removed without disturbing the gear settings.
Hub brakes are also quite often designed so that the cable anchor and casing stop can both be unhooked without undoing any fasteners.

 Gears
Some bikes have hub gears: however as these are comparably uncommon in the UK and need less maintenance than derailleur systems so they are not included in this information.
Derailleur gears use a combination of different sized front and rear chain rings with a chain that can be moved between them so that different pedalling force is required to drive the back wheel.
Most modern gear systems will be indexed: this means that you will move the gear lever one click and the chain will shift exactly onto the next chain ring.

Reliability and durability are certainly ensured with the sealed nature of the hub gear, the quality of engineering is certainly impressive, and inarguably a step above the mass produced hub gears from other very large component manufacturers, who still haven't even come close to the 14 speed range offered by the Rohloff.
Perhaps one of the cleverist and simplest principles of the hub is the presence of the indexing in the hub, and not the shifter.
Options are available, with various means of fitting the hub into the frame dependant on what kind of drop out is present on the frame, as well as standard or disc brake options.

I bought a 7 speed hub gear with hub brake to replace an SA 3 speed with hub brake.
I had to make a concious decision to go for a gear range of 300+% tween lowest and highest versus the Shimano 7 speed hub which has a smaller gear range but the jumps between gears are not as large which can make for nicer riding.
There is no apparent grinding on the lowest gear, the changing is precise, reliable, and the gear range is good enough for fairly steep hills but, it wont help you climb everything.

It is a very simple mechanism: the “driver” is threaded on the hubshell followed by the “clutch” and the brake shoe; so they are free to spin when pedalling or free-wheeling; then the brake shoe is followed by the reaction arm, which is secured on the frame to contrast the torque.
Basically, the outside of the hub spins with the wheel, while the pads are held tight by the hub spindle, but that’s not enough to contrast the torque during braking, so a reaction arm is required to keep the pads firmly in place.
While the initial cost of a drum hub is much more than a hub for rim brakes, the break-even is less than a couple of years: good-performance rim-brake pads don’t last long (less than a year if you use the bike often), and they wear the rim as well (major expense…).
