Hubble Space Telescope - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hubble's successor telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), is due to be launched in 2013.
The break in space observing capabilities between the decommissioning of Hubble and the commissioning of a successor is of major concern to some astronomers, given the great scientific and political impact of many space telescope observations.
Hubble's Power Distribution Unit was also replaced in order to correct a problem with sticky relays, a procedure that required the complete electrical power down of the spacecraft for the first time since it was launched.

 StarChild: The Hubble Space Telescope
The Hubble Space Telescope was named after Edwin Hubble, an astronomer whose contributions to astronomy include a classification system for galaxies and the Hubble Constant.
The Hubble Space Telescope was originally due to be launched in 1986, but the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger delayed the launch until April 24, 1990.
Just such a mission occurred in February of 1997 when the astronauts not only installed new instruments, but made repairs to the insulation which protects Hubble from the extreme temperatures in space.

 Hubble Space Telescope
Astronomers have been able to use the Hubble Space Telescope's sensitive instruments to isolate the light from Sirius B and measure its mass by how its gravity bends light emitted from the star.
Even though Hubble is one of the most sensitive telescopes available, the shroud of dust and gas surrounding Tempel 1 obscures a view of the comet's nucleus.
Hubble was able to see the flash from the impact, making the comet 4 times as bright, and then an expanding fan of debris moving away from the comet.

 Hubble Space Telescope
The Hubble telescope, a joint operation between NASA and the European Space Agency, was launched on April 24, 1990.
Two months after Hubble was released into a 360-mile orbit around Earth, scientists and astronomers discovered that the telescope's 2.4 meter main mirror was faulty; it was too flat on the edge by 1/50th the width of a human hair.
The corrections were so successful on Hubble that if the telescope was in Washington, DC, it could detect the light from a firefly in Tokyo, Japan, halfway around the world.

 The Hubble Space Telescope [encyclopedia]
The Hubble Space Telescope - a joint ESA/NASA project - is a 2.4-meter reflecting telescope which was deployed in low-Earth orbit (600 kilometers) by the crew of the space shuttle Discovery (STS-31) on 25 April 1990.
Hubble is successful because of its sophisticated pointing control system, which includes gyroscopes and Fine Guidance Sensors (FGSs), which can be used to lock onto guide stars (fine lock) to reduce spacecraft drift and increase pointing accuracy.
HST was designed with modular components so that on subsequent Shuttle missions it could be recovered and have faulty or obsolete parts replaced with new or improved instruments before being re-released into orbit.
