Julian's 1929 Trans-Atlanic flight, 2 years after that of Charles Lindbergh, was commemorated by Calypso music singer Sam Manning[?] in the record Lieutenant Julian, and made Julian a well known figure in the African-American and Afro-Caribbean community, and he sometimes thereafter billed himself as "The Black Lindbergh".
Julian was one of several aviators in the 1920s and 1930s who competed in outdoing each other and breifly holding records for longest non-stop flights.
During the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1935, Julian flew to Ethiopia to aid in the defense of Selassie's government.

Julian frankly admitted that "what has happened to me here hurts." But the Black Eagle has become accustomed to a fantastic up and down career in the years since 1923, when he learned parachute jumping from Clarence Chamberlin (who later flew the Atlantic).

Four years later Julian produced the classic melodrama, Lying Lips, which starred Robert Earl Jones, father of James Earl Jones.

To have both images authentically combine in one person is even more unusual, especially when that individual attended the University of California, Berkeley in the very early years of the twentieth century.
That individual was Hubert Julian (“Jay”) Stowitts, dancer, artist, track letterman and student actor who attended Cal from 1911-1915.
Born in Nebraska and raised in South Dakota (where he grew up among the Lakota Sioux), Stowitts moved with his family to Los Angeles in 1911 and entered Cal that year as a freshman.

 Black History Remains Alive in Alexander Gumby's Popular Scrapbooks
On Dec. 8, 1934, The New York Amsterdam News reported that Colonel Hubert Julian had a "narrow escape from death" when the engines of his Moth plane stalled during a fierce storm above the English Channel.
Julian, known as Harlem's 'Black Eagle' for his aviation savvy and charismatic personality, managed to fly the battered plane through giant hailstones to safety.
The Colonel's story is just one of hundreds carefully clipped and pasted in oversized scrapbooks by self-appointed culture-keeper and Harlem resident, L.S. Alexander Gumby.

Numerous brothers from the U.S and Caribbean went to Ethiopia to fight with Selassie's army, among them the "Negro Lindberg", Col.
Hubert Julian, also known as the Black Eagle of Harlem, who flew with the Imperial Army.
The support may have been due to the 1920 prophecy by Marcus Garvey who said, "Look to Africa for the crowning of a Black King." The King of Kings was crowned ten years later; therefore, Selassie's Coronations (1928 and 1930) were seen as prophecy fulfilled and the entire African world rejoiced and embraced the Emperor.
