Topic: Hubert Laws

  Hubert Laws
Laws is allowing himself to play some of the daredevil, harmonically intricate material that established him as the leading jazz flutist of his generation.
Laws, who played with the Metropolitan Opera orchestra in 1968, has technique to spare - a hefty tone that stays warm and rounded from the sultry low resister to the highest notes, dazzling speed and articulation, octave-hopping agility, fluency with bent notes and alternate fingerings.
After high school, Hubert enrolled in the music department of Texas Southern University and soon went from the classrooms of that university, to the prestigious corridors of the Julliard School of Music in New York, via Los Angeles where he gigged around for awhile at the age of 18.

CD Review of Hubert Laws - Moondance on Savoy Jazz @ jazzreview.com
Hubert Laws and Savoy Jazz are two important names in the music's history, and Moondance, Laws' new CD on the resurgent Savoy Label, reveals both as vital players in contemporary jazz as well.
If Laws has commercial success with this piece it will be well-deserved, though I must confess that I have some reservations about the slickness of the rhythm track--the 'jazz' version of a 'rock' song really shouldn't swing less than the original, even if Van is something of a special case.
Hubert Laws is delightful to listen to from start to finish on this album.

Hubert Laws - Biography - AOL Music
A talented flutist whose musical interest was never exclusively straight-ahead jazz, Hubert Laws exceeded Herbie Mann in popularity in the 1970s when he recorded for CTI.
In the 1960s, Laws made his first recordings as a leader (Atlantic dates from 1964-1966) and gigged with Mongo Santamaria, Benny Golson, Jim Hall, James Moody, and Clark Terry, among many others.
His CTI recordings from the first half of the 1970s made Laws famous and were a high point, particularly compared to his generally wretched Columbia dates from the late '70s.

 Hubert Laws: Rite of Spring
Laws plays the theme beautifully, and the arrangement also emphasizes the work of guitarists Gene Bertoncini and Stuart Scharf as well as a bassoon trio (a first for jazz arrangements, I'm sure).
Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" is given a tour-de-force arrangement by Don Sebesky and retains much of the primitive violence and passion of the original orchestral piece.
The two movements of Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 3" are a bit prone to the typical "swing the classics" mentality that can mar this type of album, but the arrangement's emphasis on counterpoint and some deft performances help carry the day.

Laws is deservedly well-known for a long series of albums stretching back to the 1960s, and he’s made mainstream jazz hits from “Amazing Grace” and his renditions of classical pieces, as well as original compositions.
After intermission, Laws took the stage and raised the bar, first with a piccolo rendition of Zvacek’s “It Might Be You.” Immediately, one was struck not only by deep technical abilities, but also a musical sense that balanced bursts of virtuoso invention with beautifully played lyrical content.

The emergence of the CTI label in the 1970s gave jazz some of its most beautiful album cover art and a decided tilt toward what has now become known as ‘smooth’ jazz.
Because, first, Laws was one of the preeminent flutists in jazz, and he beautifully rendered four classical pieces.
Second, his admix of classical and jazz transcended cliche and struck a chord in the listener that prevails today.
