Hubert Maga, the first president of independent Dahomey, the West African country now called Benin, has died of a heart attack, his family said on Monday.
Maga, who at the time of his death was a member of the Constitutional Court, was elected president in December 1960, the year Dahomey won independence from France.
Maga returned to power in 1970 as a member of a triumvirate, which in turn was overthrown in October 1972 in a coup led by Mathieu Kerekou, currently the elected president.

De fait, Hubert Maga accède à des responsabilités politiques qui en font l’une des personnalités politiques clés, même s’il n’apparaît pas alors comme l’un des animateurs de la scène politique dahoméenne ; il est ainsi pratiquement absent des débats sur les relations entre l’UPD et le RDA.
C’est donc tout en toute logique que Hubert Maga, chef naturel du Nord, obtient un siège de vice-président lors de l’élection du Bureau de la nouvelle assemblée le 14 mai.

Maga represented the Dahomey Democratic Rally party (''Rassemblement Démocratique du Dahomé'').
After years in exile, he returned to the country and served as head of a rotating three-man presidential council from 1970, together with Sourou Migan Apithy and Justin Ahomadegbé.
The latter took over the chairmanship for a few months in 1972, until a new coup took place October 26 the same year, installing Major Mathieu Kérékou as the new President of the Republic.

In the 1957 elections for the legislature Apithy's party was opposed by the Union Démocratique Dahoméene (UDD), which was based in Abomey and was led by Justin Ahomadegbe, and by the northern Mouvement Démocratique Dahoméen (MDD) of Hubert Maga.
Violent protests caused Apithy to concede 9 of the PRD seats to the UDD and to agree to serve under Maga's leadership.
