Hud Movie Review at Hollywood Video
In this tight-knit rural community, Hud Bannon (Newman) is the resident lothario and all-around heel, much to the disappointment of his proud, moralistic father Homer (Melvyn Douglas).
The Kentucky-born actress with the distinctive throaty voice plays that rarity in Hollywood movies, a frankly middle-aged woman who's sensual and vital because of her age and experience, not in spite of it.
Hud is undeniably the best of the six films Newman made with Martin Ritt, the others being The Long Hot Summer (1958), Paris Blues (1961), Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man (1962), The Outrage (1964), and Hombre (1967).

Hud Brannon (Paul Newman) is a cattle rancher who finds that his livestock is stricken with a disease (hoof and mouth) that threatens not only them, but his way of life and way of earning a living as well.
The movie is more of a rite of passage of men, yet somehow we see that there is a rebellious nature of it that we’ve seen in other movies of the time (Rebel Without a Cause and The Wild One to name a couple).
Hud is self-centered and callous, but somehow we seem to identify with him and Newman’s performance brings out the life of the character we see on screen.
