Topic: Hudson (automobile)

Hudson Motor Car - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1919 Hudson introduced the Essex brand line of automobiles; the line originally was Hudson's line for middle class auto buyers, designed to compete with Ford and Chevrolet, as opposed to the more up-scale Hudson line.
One of Hudson's most famous cars was the Terraplane produced between 1932 and 1938, first as Essex-Terraplane in 1932-1933, and then as Terraplane until 1938.
After the war, Hudson initially did quite well, and their late-1940s low and rounded "step-down" styling, which lasted through the 1954 model year, was ahead of its time when introduced, and quite aerodynamic for the era.

An automobile, usually called a car (an old word for carriage), is a wheeled vehicle that carries its own engine.
It is generally claimed that the first automobiles with gasoline powered internal combustion engines were completed almost simultaneously in 1886 by German inventors working independently, Gottlieb Daimler on 3 July 1886 in Mannheim and later Karl Benz and Wilhelm Maybach in Stuttgart.
The large scale, production-line manufacturing of affordable automobiles was debuted by Oldsmobile in 1902, then greatly expanded by Henry Ford in the 1910s.

Texas Lawyer -- Pesina v. Hudson
The Hudson's motion for summary judgment sets out the several instances of Mark's driving history on which Christine relied in her claim of negligent entrustment, although the Hudsons disputed Christine's claim that the several instances were evidence supporting her position.
The Hudsons urged in the trial court and maintain on appeal that none of the incidents, taken separately, comprise more than a scintilla of evidence that Mark was an unlicensed, incompetent, or reckless driver, and thus that the Hudsons could not have known that he was such a driver.
The Hudsons also argue that because there is no evidence that Mark actually was under the influence of alcohol or marijuana on the occasions in question, the evidence that he drove after using the substances cannot be considered in regard to whether he was a reckless driver.

 Hudson history
The automobile they had all agreed there was a good marked for was called the Hudson "Twenty" was one of the first low-priced cars on the American market, selling for $900 f.o.b.
Hudson hailed the '48 as the "car you step down into", the first American-made automobile with a low silhouette, combining greater beauty, stability, "hug-the- road" ride and safety, with adequate interionr headroom and comfort.
Hudson cars since then have retained this low silhouette, now common in the industry, while its engines kept being improved and the line rounded out, until it had a range of seven powers.

An automobile, usually called a car (an old word for carriage) or a truck, is a wheeled vehicle that carries its own engine.
For example, front-wheel drive was re-introduced by Andre Citroën with the launch of the Traction Avant in 1934, though it appeared several years earlier in road cars made by Alvis and Cord, and in racing cars by Miller (and may have appeared as early as 1897).
The first recorded automobile fatality was Bridget Driscoll in August 17, 1896 in London, England.

Hudson built the Essex through a separate corporation and in 1922 the Essex was the lowest-priced closed coach car in America and selling well.
Hudson built the Terraplane as a separate car until 1938, when it made the Terraplane a model of the Hudson, then dropped it in 1939, apparently because it felt the Terraplane tail was beginning to wag the Hudson dog and Terraplane was overshadowing Hudson.
Hudson had many glory days -- famous aviatrix Amelia Earhart helping to introduce the first Terraplane, Marshall Teague and his road-racing triumphs in the booming big-six Hornet of the '50s -- but the Depression had hurt the company badly and the stakes were getting too big in the auto business for the smaller independents.

Hudson's "Monobilt" construction was enough like Nash's "unitized" method, in which body and frame are one all-welded unit, that a changeover to one assembly line for two series of cars was much easier to bring about that it would have been with other makes.
Hudson dealers, with the Jet Series, were already active in the market for compact cars, thus were ideally qualified to sell the popular Ramblers.
The proximity of a furniture manufacturer to an automobile company was a natural, since automobile bodies of those days were made mostly of wood.

Although rarely a top-seller, Hudson was responsible for a number of important automotive innovations, including the placement of the steering wheel on the left side, the self-starter, and dual brakes.
In 1919, the Hudson Essex was introduced, a sturdy automobile built on an all-steel body that sold for pennies more than Ford's Model T. Hudson production peaked in 1929 with over 300,000 units, including a line of commercial vehicles.
Hudson coined this innovation "step-down design" because, for the first time, passengers had to step down in order to get into a car.

No invention of that time brought more change to mankind, and America, with its long distances and wide open spaces was more eager to adopt it than any other nation in the world.
he automobile was a key factor of social emancipation, as it permitted the individual (farmer, small businessman and common consumer) to by-pass the highways of commerce, which at turn of the 20th century were controlled by an oligarchy of railroad and steamship magnates.
Together with increased government regulation, the popularization of the automobile (cars and trucks) ended the predominance of the large railroad trusts in America (and elsewhere) and contributed to the establishment of a new social order : the emergence of the Middle Class.
