Community colleges, the highly adaptable but often-overlooked element of higher education, gained a big supporter this week when President Bush identified them as a key to the nation's prosperity in his State of the Union address.

Community colleges "are much more flexible in the way they operate, so they pretty much have their ear to the ground," said Norma Kent of the American Association of Community Colleges.

Anderson said the school actively promotes community use of the facility for such events as electronic town meetings, continuing education courses, or meetings of the county legislature.
With the motivation of Dr. Bulmer and assistance from IBM Corporation, a group of Hudson Valley faculty, administrators and technical support staff traveled to the IAT in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, to study its facilities and discuss options for creating similar facilities on their own campus.
