The Distribution and Breeding Status of the Hudsonian Godwit in Alaska   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Hudsonian Godwits were not observed in the Cook Inlet region from '1869 to 1906, a span of 37 years, even though Osgood (1901, 1904) and others were actively collecting there at that time.
Breeding of the Hudsonian Godwit in the Cook Inlet region of south-central Alaska was substantiated by the discovery of adults with a young bird on the nesting area, the collection of a female with collapsed follicles in the ovary and possessing incubation patches, and the observation of two juveniles.
BREEDING DISTRIBUTION OF THE HUDSONIAN GODWIT The HudsonJan Godwit is presently known to breed at Fort Anderson at the mouth of the Anderson River in northwestern Mackenzie, near the mouth of the Mackenzie River, and at Churchill, northeastern Manitoba.

 Audubon WatchList - Hudsonian Godwit
Hudsonian Godwit is a large shorebird with the distinctive long, upturned, bicolored bill typical of the godwits.
Hudsonian Godwit can be found breeding in just five limited areas of North America: two distinct sites along Hudson Bay (one in Ontario, the other in Manitoba), along the Arctic Coast of the Northwest Territories, on the southern coast of Alaska, and along the west coast of Alaska.
Hudsonian Godwit was seriously affected by unregulated hunting in the 19th century, but it is now protected in North America.

Marine Birds - Hudsonian Godwit   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Hudsonian godwit was nearly extinct due to over-hunting.
The Hudsonian godwit nests among wet sedge or grass, where up to four eggs are laid and incubated for about 22 days.
The young godwits leave the nest after 30 days and head for the tidal mud flats or beaches that are this species' preferred habitat.

Migratory Bird Management   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Alaska may support between 5,000 and 7,500 Hudsonian Godwits, 10-15% of the global population of this enigmatic species (Gill and Tibbitts 1999).
The breeding distribution is poorly known, both in Alaska and Canada, and the non-breeding grounds and spring migration routes used by Alaskan breeders are unknown (McCaffery 1996, McCaffery and Harwood 2000).
The very low breeding densities and patchy distribution of Hudsonian Godwits within apparently suitable habitat render both research and monitoring problematic (McCaffery and Harwood 2000, Elphick and Klima 2002).

 Audubon WatchList - Bar-tailed Godwit
During migration and on wintering grounds, Bar-tailed Godwit is found primarily on coastal mudflats, where it probes in exposed mud or shallow water for crustaceans, mollusks, insects, and annelid worms.
The breeding population of Bar-tailed Godwit in North America is concentrated in a limited area along the coastal plain of western Alaska, placing it at higher risk to potential disturbance.
While Bar-tailed Godwit is protected in the United States under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and is also protected on its wintering grounds in New Zealand and Australia, it is not protected on the migratory pathway along the eastern coast of Asia.

No one really questioned the idea of Bar or Black-tailed Godwit (but Marbled was easily ruled out), and it seems to me to be a Hudsonian, but I figured that I may as well ask you all your opinion on this bird.
As Marbled was ruled out (confirmed in the pics by remnant very dark feathering on the belly and vent) and as they don't seem to be dowitchers, Hudsonian Godwit is by a very long way the most likely species (especially as there were two).
I know that it seems almost impossible for any other godwits to have shown up here, but because even a hudwit would be a very notable (but not an extreme rarity) bird in Michigan, I thought that it would be worth checking if any others were possible.
