The president of the soviet was a nonparty man, "sympathetic to the Anarchists," and in essence a peaceful petty clerk who had been formerly subservient to the czarist authorities and was now subservient...
The complete absence of Mensheviks, the "left" character of the SRs, and the Anarchist hue of the petty bourgeois were due to the sharpness of the revolutionary struggle in the fleet and the dominating influence of the proletarian sections of the sailors.
This social and political characterization of Kronstadt; which, if desired, could be substantiated and illustrated by many facts and documents, is already sufficient to illuminate the upheavals which occurred in Kronstadt during the years of the civil war and as a result of which its physiognomy changed beyond recognition.

During the climatic scenes there are some magnificent shots, taken from above, where it appears as though every kid in London is rushing through the streets to help capture the criminals.
Oddly enough, although very different, the movie had somewhat the same scenic look as THE THIRD MAN. Both were set in bomb damaged cities and in HUE AND CRY there is even a scene where the kids escape through the sewers of London, predating Harry Lime's famous scene in the sewers of Vienna.
North Americans may find the accents rather a deterrent but I think the film is well worth the effort.

Hue And Cry were one of the best Scottish bands of the late 80s and early 90s, whose innovative mix of the popular and the innovative was often overshadowed by other, better known Scottish contemporaries such as Deacon Blue and Wet Wet Wet.
Most of the songs here were released when I first left home for university, and bring back fond memories of bars and clubs in early 90s Glasgow, but also remind me of how good the music scene used to be, before boy bands and American teen starlets took over the charts.
So if you want to be reminded of better times, or even just want to hear something a little bit different, then you could do worse then give Hue And Cry a chance - I'm sure you wouldn't regret it.

Amber Plan: Hue and Cry   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The English, beginning with the rule of Alfred the Great (870-901), were financially obligated to catch criminals.
It was known as the "mutual pledge system." At the report of a crime, everyone in the community had to raise a "hue and cry." If the Crown's subjects failed to catch an offender, the Crown's collectors would hit the incompetents with a royal fine.
Law enforcement in North Texas builds on the legacy with the Amber Plan, an advanced version of the "hue and cry." Created in 1996 and named after Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old Arlington, Texas, girl abducted and slain the same year, the plan emphasizes the involvement of the public and the media.
