  KH Man's C&S Huernia Flowers
This Huernia verekeri is the first plant which flowered in one of my aquaculture boxes.
Huernia verekeri is an easy species to grow.
I think they are a bit more difficult to pollinate as compared with cactus flowers.

A number of other Huernias were in flower at the time so it is impossible to be sure of the parentage, but I suspect that the most likely candidate is Huernia macrocarpa.
Huernia campanulata is closely related to both H.
From southern Namibia and the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, the plant shown was grown from seed IAS997 collected by Peter Bruyns, PVB5736, at Witmond.

 Huernia procumbens - Succulents.co.za
Point of Interest: Huernia procumbens was first classified as a duvalia because of it's prominent red annulus and the slender corolla lobes.
It was transferred to Huernia because of the corona seems to be on a 'stem', the outer corona lies on the rim of the annulus, corolla lobes are usually quite similiar.
Cultivation: A well drained soil is essential, I use a mix of 4 parts grit (usually 3mm-4mm in size), 4 parts fine river sand and one part well sifted compost.

Notes Huernia t-z - Huerniopsis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
[Asc357]looks like Huernia insigniflora, but both the stem and flower size are much larger than the description for that species so possibly it is a hybrid with one parent being H.insigniflora.
Whilst Huernia verekeri var verekeri has a wide distribution in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia and southern Malawi, var pauciflora is found only in Mozambique, its stems are prostrate and much longer and as the name suggests the flowers are solitary and less prolific.
Although it is unlikely that Huernia zebrina would hybridise in habitat, several very attractive crosses have been made some of which are shown here including PEH2723 which is a garden hybrid produced by Inge Pehlemann-Brase in Namibia.

Looks a lot like a Huernia - I have a very-green-stemmed Huernia schniederana with similar "thorns" that are just extensions of the stem itself - not removable like a cactus thorn.
Mine has small (1" or less) maroon star-shaped flowers with the typical Huernia indented "hole" in the middle, and a barely-there hint of sweet fragrance.
If you want a really nice huernia try H. ebrina, the colour in the flowers are striking to say the least.
