Huffman Prairie Flying Field is a National Historic Landmark, the site where the Wright brothers, on the heels of their successful first flights at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in December 1903, perfected their invention of a controlled, powered heavier-than-air machine.
Though Huffman Prairie Flying Field was an ordinary place, with hindsight, we can see it as a pastoral landscape standing literally and figuratively at the crossroads of change, a microcosm of the technological, social and cultural transformations brought about by the second wave of the industrial revolution.
Huffman Dam was one of five dry dams built by MCD, the capstones of a comprehensive flood control system of channels and levees.

The dams and levees operate without human intervention and have no moving parts, but people are necessary to maintain the system and monitor and operate floodgates during high-water events.
Floodgates over storm-sewer outfalls to the river are closed during high-water events to prevent the river’s rising waters from backing up into the storm sewers into the protected areas behind the levee.
The remainder of the time, the land behind the dams – 35,650 acres – is used predominantly for parkland and farmland.

After visiting the Dayton Museum of Natural History and viewing a cast of the famous Huffman Dam specimen of Isotelus, the students and teachers came up with the idea of trying to have the Huffman Dam trilobite designated as the official state fossil of Ohio.
Perhaps the most famous Isotelus specimen was discovered in 1919 by workmen digging an outlet tunnel during the construction of the Huffman Dam on the Mad River northeast of Dayton.
The Huffman Dam trilobite still occupies a prominent position in the paleontological exhibits at the Smithsonian more than 75 years later and is still one of the largest, complete trilobites of any kind ever collected.
