Oh by the way I am talking about Huffyuv version 2.1.1.The newer version is no good as far as I'm concerned,when I tried to open the outputted AVI,Windows Explorer would crash.I tried 'Always suggest RGB as the output format'option but it made no difference.
I was converting some divx.avi's to huffyuv for editing and for later conversion to MPEG2.
I would recommend to stick with the original huffyuv 2.1.1 version as it work excellent for me. and if a new version comes out i would recommend to test it thoroughly to make sure it works 110%.

HuffYUV's algorithm is roughly the same as lossless JPEG: it predicts each sample and Huffman-encodes the error.

HUFFYUV, как видно из названия, может обрабатывать только определенный формат потока, в частности YUV (у меня - UYVY).
Соответственно, Ваш драйвер выдает что-то другое, например, RGB, который,естественно, не буде обрабатываться HUFFYUV.
Если выбираю YUV12 - пишет, что не может найти драйвера для не-RGB формата, если BTYUV - появляєтсь только кодак Brooktree, а не HUFFYUV.

The main problem with HuffYUV as it is at the moment is that it does not have the ability to store YV12 data.
To always have HuffYUV always presume the frames are progressive, change this to a number higher than 576.

Do however not that it is not recommended to use a resolution that isn't divideable by 8, when using Reduced Resolution, and YUY2 naturally must med divideable by 2.
Since YUY2 uses 16 bits per pixel, Huffyuv-compressed YUY2 used to use a value of 16 in the biBitCount field.
As of version 2.1.1 Huffyuv puts 24 in this field to make them happy, and stores the actual value elsewhere.

Huffyuv and CCE will always use YUY2 for encoding but fall back to RGB for CCE dialogs that display video if the "always rgb output format" checkbox is on!
Original Huffyuv has a fatal flaw that might lead to crashes due to buffer overflows.
However, it looks like he uses the Huffyuv reported buffer size to keep track of the amount he is writing to the file, but he actually only writes the true content of the buffer which is less than the reported size.

If you need to decompress for filtering, then huffyuv can be used to store the decompressed result.
If I use huffyuv to save the filtered file, It only takes one pass to filter the footage, and then I can use multipass MPEG2 encoder which will only take a few hours.
A fresh install probably wouldn't fix the huffyuv problem since it was one of the first things I installed.

Se acquisisci in huffyuv o in avi non compresso devi poi ricomprimere il filmato in un secondo momento, applicando eventuali filtri per migliorare la qualita'.
Huffyuv e' stato pensato appositamente come formato di passaggio e serve per far risparmiare spazio rispetto al formato non compresso.
Ovviamente, se acquisisci in huffyuv non puoi acquisire in altri formati e viceversa.

Incidentally, this is using hypercam 2.1, with the huffyuv lossless codec, and XP formatted as NTFS.
Also, there may be a problem with huffyuv codec for such files, and you try another codec and let me know if you still have this problem?
I think it would be good to try anyway to record a sample file that is over 2 GB with another codec, maybe the old Windows Video 1 codec, and see what happens.

Best thing to do would be to capture using huffyuv and then frameserve with AVISynth using denoising, deinterlacing, etc. filters as needed.
There should be a YV12 capable version of huffyuv soon, although I guess that woudn't help if you are converting to mpeg as I don't know of any mpeg encoders that accept YV12 inputs, despite the fact that is what they output.
I agree that huffyuv is not really for playback, however it is perfect for capturing.

Sul sito ufficiale troverete una spiegazione dettagliata di come ciò sia possibile, ma senza scendere nei particolari si puo' dire che con l'utilizzo di tale forma di compressione i  "valori"  più ricorrenti vengono rappresentati mediante una codifica di lunghezza più breve rispetto a quelli che invece appaiono più raramente.
Un video compresso con il codec Huffyuv, richiede circa un terzo dello spazio necessario rispetto a quello di un video non compresso (video a 704x576 richiedono intorno ai 9MB/sec, valore alla portata della maggior parte degli Hard Disk in commercio).
E' possibile utilizzare il codec Huffyuv anche con formati RGB ma in questo caso si perde la "natura loss-less" di tale compressione...

The latest huffyuv is pretty old, so I was wondering if there were any advances since then.
The first two huffyuv's are latest huffyuv, lagarith is latest lagarith, and everything else, I used latest ffdshow encoder.
If you need speed to avoid framedropping (me!), huffyuv is still the best, but ffdshow's version is the latest and greatest, compressing significantly better.

I don't know specifics about the HUFFYUV codec, but to me, if the end file is smaller, then you're loosing data somewhere, and a loss of data would be loss of qality, but I could be wrong.
Huffyuv is not based on DCT like all other codecs.
zxc, I believe that you are confusing lossless encoding by Huffyuv with the ability for it to work with DV in an uncompressed, or 'lossless' state.

Lagarith is able to outperform Huffyuv due to the fact that it uses a much better compression method.
Additionally, the decode speed tends to be slower than the encode speed; this is due to the nature of Arithmetic compression and the prediction algorithm.
This codec was build using the Huffyuv source as a template, and uses some Huffyuv code, most notably the routine to upsample YUY2 video to RGB and to perform pixel prediction on YUY2 video.

This patch of Huffyuv may be of interest to the contributers to this forum.
Stores the interlaced setting in the file like v0.2.4 did it, but in the same format as the new Huffyuv v2.2.0 to improve compatibility.

There are only 2 things you could ever want to choose here - HuffYUV (included in the AMVapp) or Uncompressed RGB (unless you are using the native options of a hardware card).
The only time I'd honestly advocate using this method is if you have a FAT32 HD or HuffYUV is producing 'dirty frames' as using the frameserver and creating the HuffYUV file in Virtualdub can help with this.
This may also happen if you are trying to write a large huffyuv file to a Fat32 drive as it can only store 2gig files.

Problem is, when I use the Huffyuv codec in vdub with its default settings, my output file ends up at 26.7gb.
If you're compressing an XviD compressed video, huffyuv is going to make the filesize much larger than it should be.
I was expecting Huffyuv to losslessly compress my H264 and keep it the same size as the input.

Mplayer is said to have a built-in HuffYUV decoder, maybe that works.
For what it's worth (very little), I converted the HuffYUV file to raw YUV with ffmpeg (appears to have the same error as everyone else).

This is what I consider as good enough for archiving and not too big for archiving.
Huffyuv is a free codec, that is very fast and can compress losslessly.
It produces video, where every frame is a keyframe, thus very fast when you edit this type of video material.
