Harold Laski: Introduction to Vindiciae Contra Tyrannos
The consequence was that while the Hugenots were striving to prove that the well-being of the state demanded their toleration, and the Catholics to insist that their religion must not be subordinated to purely temporal considerations, each was in fact compelled to envisage the broader political situation in the hypothesis they presented.
The Hugenot policy in the Netherlands had failed; and she herself suspected both the ambition of the Bourbons, and the ascendancy established by Coligny over the mind of her son.
Like all the Hugenots, he uses the Bible as the obvious source of social truths; and it is not without significance that it is the discussion of civil problems that is least grounded in biblical authority.

It is therefore particularly interesting, albeit perhaps coincidental, that he looked to the Herbier Boissier, now part of the Botanical Garden of Geneva, for help in his research on plants of the Levant.
The prominent family of botanists, de Candolle, were Hugenots from southern France who fled to Geneva to avoid persecution by French authorities.
Their house and original botanical garden were located near St Peter's Cathedral, Calvin's church.

 La Couronne Wine Estate
La Couronne translates to The Crown in French and also is the namesake of the largest French warship built to that time, 25 feet longer and 7 feet broader in the beam than the next largest of the King's ships, laid down in 1629 on the banks of the Seudre River in Brittany.
It is this ship which transported French Hugenots to the Cape and therefore holds a special place in the history of wine making in South Africa.
Today we honour the memory of the 277 French Hugenots who arrived in the Cape in 1685.

 Hugenots
The most significant Hugenot settlement was established in Lisnagarvey (Lisburn) when, following William III’s Bill to develop the linen trade in 1697, more than seventy families, led by Louis Crommelin, arrived in Lisburn, to escape persecution in their native France.
The registers of the Church of Ireland church in Lambeg and Christ Church Cathedral, Lisburn contain many Hugenot names.
The main Hugenot registers were lost in the mid-nineteenth century.

Our Christian roots are unforgettable and should not be neglected, but celebrated.
From the French Hugenots and Spanish missionaries, America had experienced many attempts at national evangelization before the English Christians arrived.
Nevertheless, Jamestown became the cornerstone of faith for the New World as the first permanent English colony established a Christian community according to Anglican provision.

I heard about the Hugenots, but I never made the connection...were they all Protestants?
It just seems strange but all the French Acadian churches in the area (which is predominately French--we have French schools and people here seem to have nothing better to do but fight about whether English or French is superior and that's another issue) are Roman Catholic...hmmm and the plot thickens!
