Hugh Faringdon alias Hugh Cook was sub-chamberlain of the Benedictine Abbey of Reading at the death of Abbot Thomas Worcester in July 1520, and was elected to supply the vacancy.
He was probably of obscure birth and a native of Faringdon in Berkshire.
He sat in Parliament from 1523 to 1539 and, in the former year, was one of the triers of petitions from Gascony and the parts beyond the sea.

Hugh Cook Faringdon (Unknown to 15th November 1539),also known as Hugh Faringdon or Hugh Cook of Faringdon where he was presumably born.
When the commissioners arrived to take the surrender of Reading Abbey, they reported favourably of the Abbot's willingness to conform, but the surrender of the Abbey does not survive, and it is not therefore known whether Faringdon signed it.
In 1539, Faringdon was indicted of high treason accused of having assisted the Northern rebels with money.

Hugh II, the eighth abbot, who ruled from 1180 to 1199, was a great theologian; in the latter year he was made abbot of Cluny.
In March, 1538, Abbot Hugh was still in favour, and was placed on the commission of the peace for the county of Berks.

Hugh Faringdon became a royal chaplain and twice took the Oath of Supremacy acknowledging Henry as Supreme Head of the Church in England.
But Hugh Faringdon refused to surrender and is said to have been captured in a secret hiding place at his favourite summer residence, Bere Court (1½ miles SW of Pangbourne).

In September Faringdon was accused of treason, and taken to the Tower.
Faringdon’s death sentence was passed by Thomas Cromwell, the King’s chief minister, without the proper trial that was his due.
Beatified in 1895 he gave his name to Blessed Hugh Faringdon Catholic School and is also commemorated in the Church of the English Martyrs, in Leibenrood Road.

Faringdon signed the articles of faith in 1536 which acknowledged the royal supremacy of the church, but according to a contemporary writer he had added in conscience 'of the temporal church but not of the spiritual'.
Accordingly Faringdon was arrested on September 17, and imprisoned in the Tower of London.
Hugh Faringdon, along with John Enyon and John Rugge, and Richard Whiting, abbot of Glastonbury and Thomas Beche (or Marshall), abbot of Colchester were beatified in 1895.

The origin of the Congregational cause in Faringdon is to be traced back to about the year 19760 when a Lincolnshire builder, John Fidel, came to town to supervise the erection of Beckett House (Shrivenham).
He ministered in Faringdon for 27 years, and succeeded in expanding the work into Fernham and Shellingford, where chapels were built.
It was in 1840 that the present chapel was built, being an extension of existing premises, taking in the vestry on the West side and bringing out the front where the minister’s house formerly stood, and all at a cost of £740.
