CANOE -- JAM! Music - Pop Encyclopedia - Marsh, Hugh   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Classically trained extreme violinist Hugh Marsh played nothing but classical music from age 5 until he was 20 in Ottawa.
While back home in Ottawa at Christmas time in 1979, Marsh had a chance encounter with Bruce Cockburn who asked Marsh to join him, along with his brother, bassist Fergus Marsh (who was already in Cockburn's act).
Marsh branched out in 1984 with the independent album 'The Bear Walks' in 1984 with fellow musical support from Doug Riley (keyboards), Peter Cardinalli (guitar, production), Michael Brecker (tenor sax)and the album was soon scooped up by Duke Street Records.

Moving to Toronto in the late 70's Hugh hooked up with Bruce Cockburn and thus began a creative 8 year musical association.
Both albums received critical acclaim and were highly original combining Marsh's compositional, improvisational and arranging skills with the pop talents of vocalist Robert Palmer and the jazz essence of saxist Michael Brecker.
Marsh's creativity always places him at the fore front of the music scene whether it be eclectic pop, hard-core rap-funk or searing jazz.

when violinist Hugh Marsh takes his solo, say, from the side of Loreena McKennitt's stage, the room is all shadow and sound that begs to split the walls.
In conversation at a west end cafe where Marsh knows pretty much everybody, you decide quickly that this has less to do with drama and more with the easy curiosity and sensitivity with which he seems to approach his work and his life - which are basically the same

Bowed Electricity - Electric violin players, makers, and resources
I first found out about Hugh Marsh via Loreena McKennitt's album "The Mask and Mirror," to which he contributed some wonderfully exciting solos.
That album drew much inspiration from medieval and middle eastern styles, so it's not suprising to see Marsh working with sarod player Randev Pandit on "Anhata," an album that's 'fusion' not so much in the Mahavishnu sense as in a fairly elegant meeting of eastern and western folk styles and instrumentation.
