  Hugh McCartney - Telegraph
McCartney was a relatively moderate Labour figure by the standards of his day; though a stalwart trades unionist, his early years as an MP were dominated by the dispute at the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders.
McCartney, who had joined the ILP in 1934 and was irreproachably working class, backed the workers, saying that, if the Heath government failed to produce jobs, troops would have to be brought from Ulster to patrol Clydeside and that the Tory Minister John Davies would need bodyguards to visit the area.
Hugh McCartney was born on January 3 1920, the son of a tramway worker, and educated at John Street Secondary School and the Royal Technical College, Glasgow.

McCartney and John Lennon were the main songwriters in The Beatles, and many of McCartney’s compositions of this period, including "Hey Jude", "Eleanor Rigby," "Yesterday" and "Let It Be", are frequently ranked among the best songs in popular music history.
McCartney famously insisted that his wife should be involved with his music — and later tour in his bands so they did not have to be apart while he travelled — in spite of her protests that she was not talented enough.
McCartney performed during the pre-game ceremonies at the NFL's Super Bowl XXXVI on 3 February 2002 and was the halftime performer at Super Bowl XXXIX on 6 February 2005.

Hugh McCartney was born in 1920 in Bridgeton, Glasgow, one of the eight children of a Glasgow tram-driver.
McCartney told me that it was the impression made on him as a young man by the remarkable local councillors of Coventry that enticed him to stand for local election in Kirkintilloch, where he was a town councillor for 15 years from 1955.
McCartney thought that his son was pivotal to the Labour government and rightly so and was pleased at his performance, just as he had been pleased, all those years ago, in 1965, when the teenage Ian had led the first strike of paper delivery boys in central Scotland.
