Hugh Munro was remembered by club members as having about him a "strange mixture of courtesy and pugnacity", a "wonderful ear and memory for music" and two small feet, which blessed him with notable skill in Highland dancing.
To the public, Munro was famous for his trademark mysterious bag of dark cloth, which he was always seen to be carrying, and which may or may not have contained a compass, aneroid barometer, maps, thermometer and measuring pole.
Sir Hugh, however, at the end of his time in Scotland, is believed to have scaled all 538 "tops", or points on a hill that exceed 3,000ft but are considered part of a bigger peak.

Munro was the first person to systematically list all the Scottish mountains above 3000 feet (914m) and his tables were first published in 1891.
Munro was never to climb all the mountains on his list.
However, not all 3000-foot peaks are classified as Munros; generally it is the principal summit on a hill which is listed and the subsidiary summits are called 'tops'.

Scotland's highest mountains are known as Munros, named after Sir Hugh T. Munro who in 1891 surveyed all the country's mountains above 3000 feet (914.4 metres) and produced his Tables which catalogued 236 peaks that he deemed to be individual mountains.
Currently, there are 284 Munros and a further 511 'Tops' (those peaks above 3000 feet which are part of a range or ridge but which are judged not to be a separate mountain).
Climbing all the Munros, or Munro-bagging as it's usually called, is a very popular pursuit amongst the climbing and hillwalking fraternity.
