Hugh de Kevelioc, 3rd Earl of Chester was born in 1147, the son of Ranulph de Gernon, 2nd Earl of Chester and Maud of Gloucester, daughter of Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester.
He is thought by some to have taken his name from Kevelioc in Monmouth as his birthplace, but others think that instead he was born in and took the name of Cyfeiliog in Mereonithshire or Meirionydd.
Hugh of Kevelioc died 30 June 1181 at Leeke, Staffordshire, England.

Hugh, who was probably one of William the Conquerors companions, was made earl of Chester in 1071; he had special privileges in his earidom, and he held land in twenty counties.
His life was mainly spent in fighting the Welsh and in Normandy, and he died on the 27th of July 1101.
Hughs only son Richard, who was childless, was drowned in the White Ship in November 1120.
