City of Monash: Environmental History 1900 to 1945
Between 1897 and 1929, Oakleigh was the favoured spot, mainly because of the railway and the unloading ramp at the station.
The opening of new stations at Hughesdale and East Oakleigh both reflected and emphasised the fact that most new subdivison was within easy reach of a station.
Attempts to persuade the rail authorities to provide unloading facilities at either East Oakleigh or Clayton stations failed and the Council was reduced to banning cattle from the streets except between the hours of 1am and 6am This did nothing to protect the residents of East Oakleigh from the smell of the abattoirs themselves.

 Oakleigh, Victoria
By then the Oakleigh area was substantially built up, and housing was extending to Hughesdale and Huntingdale (East Oakleigh) in the vicinity of their railway station.
Oakleigh's strategic importance in railway movement was strengthened when a metropolitan ring railway, known as the Outer Circle, was opened in 1890, commencing a shirt distance west of Oakleigh at Hughesdale.
In 1877 the railway to Gippsland was begun, its Melbourne commencement point being Oakleigh.

Flinders Street station underwent a substantial renovation in the late '90s, and the resulting open-plan design, albeit a tad clinical, is conducive to moving masses of people efficiently from A to B. A gigantic open area on ground level is rimmed by coffee, snack-food and newspaper outlets and clean public toilets.
Historic Flinders Street station, with its large copper dome and row of clocks above the front entrance stairs, has been the hub of Melbourne's metropolitan train services since last century: the first trains chugged out of here in 1854.
Buy your ticket at the windows just inside the "clocks" entrance, validate it before entering the station complex via the automated turnstiles, then check the overhead computerised readouts to find the appropriate platform and time of departure.

City of Monash: The Gippsland Railway
Although the Gippsland railway was completed in 1879, the peak year of the land boom was not until a decade later.
However, although the railway was constructed between 1883 and 1891, only one train ever ran on it and it became known as Ross's Folly.
Clayton's station buildings were not erected until 1891 and the area did not share in the 1880s boom.

 Aussiecon Three Progress Report #2:
The Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn, for instance, was built around its railway station.
Whatever happens to those model railways, they already have given their special pleasure; not because of what they are, but because of the way they attached themselves to my imagination.
Railway trains are symbols of power, especially when carried along by steam engines.

Agent FareEvader's Hecho En Mexico - Boldly going where no-one else wants to
This station, and the surrounding area of high-density housing commission estates was named in honour of the Battle of El-Alamein, which occurred in Egypt in World War II and was one of the turning points of the entire conflict.
This station boasted an interesting form of hailing a train when it was an unscheduled stop - intending passengers would have to place a red light upon a signal post to inform an approaching train of their desire to catch it.
The station is a quaint little affair, with a small timber structure of mid-1920s' construction on the up platform, and a shelter on the down side dating from the 1970's.

 Hughesdale, Victoria
Hughesdale was the sit of the diversion of the Outer Circle Railway line (1890) from the Gippsland Line, but the area had no railway station until 1924.
Coincidentally, an ill-fated line known as the Rosstown Railway diverged from the Gippsland line just east of Hughesdale, ending at Elsternwick, in 1891.
The name came from Oakleigh's Mayor James Hughes, who, with the Poath Road Railway Station League, succeeded in having a railway station provided.

Events in the Past: Hold-up at Mentone
Evans admitted that he took a bag of coins from the station’s safe which he though were ‘two bobs’ but turned out to be ‘coppers’.
William Hind Newlands, a motor mechanic, was working at his brother’s garage, the Mentone Service Station, on the corner of Balcombe Road and Swanston Street.
He was making this comment in relation to the case of Kenneth Evans and John Bailey who faced charges of armed robbery at Mentone on December 27, 1927.

Railway line to Glen Waverley duplicated, allowing direct runs to Melbourne instead of single-carriage shuttle service
Before the appearance of the white man the Boonorung Aboriginal tribe occupied the area from the mountains East of Melbourne to the shores of Port Phillip Bay as they hunted throughout the year.
It would appear that the earliest white settlement of the Mulgrave area was in about 1836/37 with Joseph and John Hawdon grazing cattle along the Dandenong Creek.
