The decision to choose Hugo Simberg for the Finnish painter we wanted to study in the Comenius Project "Art in European Schools" was not an easy one.
They loved and appreciated the artist's way of treating his characters: Simberg shows us that an angel can have soiled or broken wings and a devil can be poor and in need of help, and even death can be tender and gentle.
Simberg, too, was not a painter of cities; his inspiration came from the unindustrial countryside and unviolable Finnish nature much resembling the environment in which our pupils are living even today.
