The Huia (Heteralocha acutirostris) was a bird endemic to New Zealand.
Huia moved mainly on foot, flying weakly, and would call with a shrill whistle to ensure other members of the cohort were close by.
Huia had been seen many times in this area before (there were also reports of sightings here in 1912 and 1913) and this area of mixed beech and podocarp forest was well within the bird's known range - sadly, no effort was made by naturalists from the Wellington Museum to investigate.

TerraNature | New Zealand Ecology - Huia
Huia tail feathers are a traditional Maori symbol of authority.
While today we are astounded by the ruthless hunting of huia to extinction during a very short period, and the ignorance of the time, even amongst respected ornithologists, we are left with no excuse for more bird losses with current knowledge of the value of biodiversity.
Huia were so sexually dimorphic, and unique because of the different beak forms of the male and female, that they were at first thought to be separate species.

Extinct Birds of NZ The Huia
The huia was very distinctive (easy to recognise) because of its beak, beautiful fl feathers, the tail feathers tipped with white, and its bright orange wattle.
Huia chicks would have been killed by the Polynesian rat (kiore) and adult huia may have been killed by dogs.
To wear a huia tail feather or beak as ornamentation was a great honour, so huia were killed for their feathers and beaks.

The huia - at Pukaha Mount bruce
Although the huia lived in other North Island areas such as the Tararua Ranges, the Kaimanawa Ranges and the Urewera, they were never more abundant than in and around this dense bush near Dannevirke and Norsewood.
This was the last bastion of the huia and could justly claim to be the "home of the huia".
The Huia was also unique in that the female and male beaks were shaped differently making the bird internationally sought after and traded by collectors and museums around the world.

 About the huia
The wattlebirds of New Zealand are not found anywhere else in the world, and the huia was unique as the only bird in the world with completely different beak forms in the male and female.
The ancient Callaeidae family flew to New Zealand 60 million years ago, and like many of the birds in the isolated archipelago, huia adopted ground feeding habits in an ecology devoid of mammals.
“Huias were very plentiful and were to be seen on all the fallen logs until the bush fires of 1898 killed most of them.

HUIA - 1966 Encyclopaedia of New Zealand
Huia (Heterolocha acutirostris) is a species belonging to the endemic family of wattle birds, which also includes the saddleback (Philesturnus carunculatus) and the kokako, or New Zealand “crow” (Callaeas cinerea).
The numbers and range of the once widely spread saddleback and kokako have become severely reduced, but the huia, whose original distribution was limited to the eastern part of the southern half of the North Island, is believed to have been extinct since the first decade of the present century.
In size huias were about as big as Australian magpies, and their plumage was wholly greenish fl, except for a broad white band across the tip of the tail; the bill was ivory white, the wattles orange, and the legs and feet bluish-grey.

Wine of the Week - A tasting of some Huia wines
The Huia signature is a big palate that builds in the bottle as it matures.
The Huia Brut, with the primary fermentation in old French oak, 40 months on yeast lees in bottling for the secondary fermentation, and hand riddling before disgorgement, emulates that taste.
Technically drier than the Huia '03, the ripeness of the fruit with some botrytis influence makes it seems sweeter though nicely balanced by the fresh lemon/tangelo/line acidity.

Most New Zealanders have heard of the huia (Heteralocha acutirostris), a beautiful bird that became extinct in the early part of the 20th century.

Because the louse was only recently discovered on the old huia skins, nobody has ever seen it alive.

Unique New Zealand wildlife - Wanganui - Huia feathers and Foxton
Although all the rarer species were under pressure from collectors during the nineteenth century, it was the huia, because of its beauty, that was singled out for special attention.
One influential figure of this period who was alarmed at the rate at which the huia was declining was the then Govemor-general, the Earl of Onslow; the Earl tried to provide legal protection for the huia and several other species of birds.
Besides the beauty of its plumage, it was the only known bird in the world where the beaks of the male and female differed, and dramatically so - the female beak was long and curved while that of the male was short and truck.
