La Esperanza coffee is the coffee of 80 small coffee growers who live in the "veredas" of La Esperanza, El Carmen, El Pénsil, Palmito, El Porvenir located on the southern part of the Department of Huila.

The authorities blamed FARC guerrillas for the December massacre of 15 farmers in Samana, Caldas department.
The ELN is suspected of involvement in the February 6 killing of nine farmers in the La Cristalina community, in Santander department (Magdalena Medio region).
The kidnaping apparently was in retaliation for meetings that the mayors had held with representatives of the ELN to seek respect for the lives of the civilian population in their municipalities.

The governance secretary of Cauca department later clarified that it was the military’s Pichincha Battalion which first reported the abduction.
On August 28 in Riosucio municipality, Caldas department, an unidentified armed group abducted and subsequently executed Embera Chamí leaders Jesús Alberto Andica Salarzar of the Playa Bonita community in the San Lorenzo reserve and Nelson Enrique Castañeda of the Sipirra community.

Salazar, owner of Radio Sevilla, in the Valle del Cauca Department in southwestern Colombia, was found dead in his apartment in the town of Sevilla at 9:30 a.m.
