The airfields are situated near Kulob and Kurgan-Tobe, both in southern Tajikistan near the Afghan border, and at Hujand in northwestern Tajikistan.
Hujand, more distant from Afghanistan and separated from it by mountains within Tajikistan, is suitably located and equipped for handling bomber and transport aviation on shuttle missions to Afghanistan.
Hujand is located in the partly Uzbek-inhabited, relatively developed, and secularized Soghd Region of Tajikistan.

Rahmonov survived an assassination attempt in April 1997 in Hujand, as well as two attempted coups in August 1997 and in November 1998.
Although he went on hajj to Mecca in June 1997, he was deeply influenced by the Gathas of Zoroaster as a young man. Rakhmonov convinced UNESCO to declare 2002-2003 the third millennium since Zoroaster's birth, and in his book, The Tajiks in the Mirror of History, he claimed that Zoroaster was a Tajik from Bactria.

Serghei Basarab, one of the pastors from Hujand, northern Tajikistan, (whom I met there last August) was shot in Isfara, Tajikistan, by an Islamic fundamentalist on January 12 as Serghei knelt in his home in morning prayer.
When Tamara, his wife, came into the room, Serghei was already dead.
Please pray for the delegates from Central Asia who are still trying to get their visas, and that God will use the conference to inform, give fresh insights into contextualizing the message, and inspire us all to love Muslims and sensitively share our witness, whatever the cost.
