Hukvaldy Castle had great importance during the 30 Year War, in the course of which it was besieged several times.
Later he bought a small house with a garden in Hukvaldy, which he later bequeathed in his will to the town provided his rooms would remain preserved in their original state.
Hukvaldy Castle and the land around have been the scene of the international music festival "Janáček's Hukvaldy" for several years, visited by many superb musician and music lovers from near and far.

 Leos Janacek
He was sent away from the village by his parents at the age of 11 to be educated at the ‘Queen’s’ Augustinian Monastery in Brno, but the village of his birth was always held dear to him and he returned there frequently.
It was in Hukvaldy that Janáček caught the pneumonia which was to eventually kill him in August, 1928.
The cottage was kept as a memorial to the composer, and following renovations a few years ago it is now a charming museum, replete with manuscripts, designs from the operas and details of the composer’s life in the village.

Even before the end of the Thirty Years' War the fortification of Hukvaldy was strengthened by the construction of huge bastions both in the western and eastern parts of the castle.
At present the castle is being reconstructed step-by-step on the expenses of the Beskids Museum in Frydek-Mistek.
It commemorates an outstanding native of Hukvaldy, the composer Leos Janacek {1854-1928}.

The first references on the Hukvaldy Castle date back to the year 1285, it is expected that its construction started around mid 13th century and its founders were German Counts of Hückeswagen.
Many major building conversions of the castle were realised at that time and after their death in early 16th century, when again and for a long period then, the Hukvaldy Castle was returned to the Olomouc Diocese (in the 18th century it became the Archdiocese) until 1948, when the castle was nationalized.
At that time the Hukvaldy Castle used to be mentioned as a romantic ruin and a favourite place for a trip, which it still true.

In this small Moravian village nestled on the northern slopes of the Beskydy hills, Leos Janacek was born on July 3rd 1854.
At the age of eleven Janacek was sent away from Hukvaldy to a choir school in Brno; he didn't return for over twenty years and never saw his father again - he died the year after Leos left.
For years when he visited he stayed with the Hukvaldy forester, but in 1921 he bought his own house in the village - today it's a museum to the composer.

Nowadays there was much effort shown to put the castle in better condition again and reconstruction is still in process.
