 Hulagu Khan Summary
In 1262-1263 Hulagu was involved in hostilities in the Caucasus area with his cousin Berke, the ruler of the Golden Horde and the ally of his enemies, the Mamluk rulers of Egypt.
Hulagu's troops were at first victorious, crossing the Terek into Berke's territory, but were then driven back with heavy losses; many were drowned in the river when the ice gave way under their horses' hooves.
Hulagu broke the power of the Assassin sect (1256), executed the last of the Abbasid caliphs and destroyed Baghdad (1258), then, at the hands of the Mamluks in Nazareth, became the first Mongol leader to suffer a serious defeat (1260).

Still, Bush and Hulagu differ in one prominent aspect: Hulagu was an awesome warrior and a fighter who invaded while riding and leading his hordes; Bush is a civilian who thinks that he is a warrior because the constitution designates him the commander-in-chief.
Since Hulagu’s strong willed mother (Sorghaghtan Beki) was Christian, it is permissible to speculate that she was the inspiration (maybe out of hate or rivalry) behind the invasion of Abbasid territory.
Hulagu killed the caliph by wrapping him in a rug and having him either "beaten to a pulp" or trampled by horses.

Hulagu’s letters (rather ultimatums) to the Governor of Damascus and earlier to the Khalifah (caliph) of Islam were quite reminiscent of the letters the Muslim prophet Mohammed-ibn-Abadallah sent to the Persian and Byzantine Emperors to Embrace Islam and be safe, or face a Muslim Invasion.
