The Queen Emma Summer Palace was acquired by the Daughters of Hawai'i in 1913, narrowly avoiding the demolition of the house and construction of a baseball field on the grounds.
In 1925, the Territorial Legislature purchased Hulihe‘e and set it aside for the Daughters to use and maintain as a museum.
They decided that the Hulihe‘e grounds was the most desirable location in Kailua-Kona and at once began to pressure the Daughters to relinquish Hulihe‘e.

Kona bob, when you mentioned Hulihe`e Palace, I remembered the beautiful, lonely old koa guitar sitting in the case there; hopefully it gets played by the staff sometimes, hopefully while sitting out on the back porch.
At the Borders signing the next day we met a woman who had studied Hula with her and told us they were all scared of her because "she WAS pele" to them.
