Film of the week: The Incredible Hulk - Scotsman.com News
FIVE years ago, Marvel's worst fears were realised when the opening weekend of their movie revealed Hulk to be no smash, as Ang Lee's agonised rendition of the tantrum-throwing guy in green failed to do incredible business at the box office.
And yet the first half of the film seems promising, with a rooftop chase sequence that offers Bourne Identity-style chops in order to evade a US military who are determined to exploit Banner's bad luck and create an invincible super-soldier.
The most noticeable difference between the two is that while Hulk is shirtless and favours stretchy pants to cover his little hulk, the Abomination is bald, raw-boned, muscular and naked, with no genitals at all.

Hulk (film) - Marvel Universe   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Others praised the film's action sequences, the use of symbolism and visual metaphors, and technical effects, but felt the overall pacing was much too slow and dramatic.
However, the film's final scene suggests that Banner has made the decision to direct both his and the Hulk's abilities to helping those who need it (very much like the protagonist of the television series).
David Banner in the film essentially becomes a film-adapted version of the Absorbing Man, a Hulk villain from the early comic series, who has also battled Thor and Spider-Man, various individual members of, and different team incarnations, of the Avengers, among others.

On the surface, the Hulk's nemesis is the military commanded by General Ross.
The end of the film finds Betty Ross and her father operating under close, yet strained conditions as the elder Ross tries to balance his attempts to comfort his daughter's loss with his uncertainly-motivated mission to find Banner.

FILM ROTATION : Producers claim THE HULK (LITE) will smash again!
The hulk was the hardest thing to bring to the screen and it was brought to life and the emotions it had was superb and shocking.
I went into the film expecting the film to be so and while not totally put off by the unexpected, I didn't quite enjoy the doom and gloom that every character seemed to be hanging from their necks like a 200 lb ball and chain.
Hulk is the first comic book film where I felt like I was getting a representation of how somebody wanted to tell their story, and not the studio ticking boxes in osme bloody focus group.

Guardian Unlimited Film | Reviews | Hulk (2003)
However the film is far from perfect, the CGI Hulk looks good but he's just not fierce-looking or rage-contorted enough, he does indeed look like a giant toddler who's throwing a tantrum because he's been denied his favourite chocolate bar.
Now I know films based on kids comics are not going to be 100% credible, but the hulk seemed to have trouble fighting off a mutant poodle in one scene, and then was able to throw a battle tank fully 100 yards, after a couple of fancy twirls in the next.
The film seems to be aimed at an adult audience, but its naivety is astounding, the storyline sucks, and the general flow is poor.

Joey the Film Geek: Reviews - "Hulk"
I was a big fan of "The Incredible Hulk," the TV series with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno that ran from the late 1970s to the early 80s.
"Hulk" (I thought the title was "The Hulk," but as it turns out, there is no "The" in the title) is a movie that will probably disappoint a lotta people, and not just purists of the TV show.
Another thing that the two films have in common is that there's a lot going on in the both stories, and they're a lot deeper than most people would probably like.

 The Hulk Film Review
The "Hulkification" in the film is exponential, meaning that the angrier he gets, the bigger and stronger he gets so that leads to some excellent battles and is a superb approach which of course, couldn't have really been satisfactorily explored in the comics and definitely not in the TV series.
The second half of the film is dominated by the big green man himself, and here we have one of the films most contentious issues, and that is the decision to make the Hulk a totally computer generated creation.
The Hulk character looks very much like a computer graphic and this kind of works in a comic book sort of way, however there are still times when the overall effect is not that convincing.

 Review: Hulk - Film Junk
Hulk reminded me of this, because as we all know, the Hulk isn’t really a superhero at all… he’s just a guy who gets really big and smashes stuff when he’s mad.
The acting was a very important part of the film, since the action sequences are kind of sparse and the story itself is pretty straightforward.
It’s true that The Hulk is a darker character, but there wasn’t really any humour at all, and there weren’t many extra little details for the fans (aside from the standard Stan Lee cameo).

Edward Norton to star in upcoming Hulk film | Entertainment | Film | Reuters
The new movie is based on the comic book series telling of the exploits of Banner, a scientist who transforms into a giant green brute, and it follows a 2003 big-budget film called "Hulk" that failed to catch fire with audiences or critics.
"The Incredible Hulk" will be directed by Louis Leterrier, a Frenchman whose previous films include the action adventure "The Transporter." The new movie is expected to be in theaters by June 2008, and will be distributed by Universal Pictures.
His version of "Hulk" raked in $245 million at global box offices, but the amount was deemed to be a modest sum given its high expectations and budget of nearly $140 million.

The Film Asylum - The Hulk Film Review
The Hulks movement is slow and clumsy yet still some how extremely agile especially when he builds momentum for one of his super jumps that see's him literally souring six miles across the sky like a frog on steroids.
Sure these's plenty of Hulk smashing but Ang and his team have been very carefully to avoid the Hulk visually harming anyone thus keeping the blood quota down and keeping the parents happy.
The start of the film is also a little slow as the build up to the inevitable 'gamma radiation' accident seem's to take an age.

You have this tragic figure, this child-like green monster, constantly being hated and hounded by a relentless military dedicated to his destruction, when all he really wants is to be accepted by his loved ones for who he is, and to be left alone, away from the outside world.
The first film should have focused on developing the character of the Hulk and exploring the various relationships of him and the other characters: Bruce/Betty, Betty/General Ross, Bruce/General Ross, Bruce/Brian, Bruce/Hulk, Betty/Talbot, the Bruce/Betty/Talbot triangle, etc al.
The Hulk should have been a nice, neat amalgam of the origin in Incredible Hulk #1, the stories of Banner’s past in #s 312, 377, and -1, and some all-new material.

When asked by Kit how the new Hulk film will be different in tone from the first film, Ari Arad [Avi’s son and fellow producer] said that the idea behind the next movie is to make the Hulk the action/adventure movie that fans want to see.
The director said that he felt that the Hulk needed an opposite number, and will give the threatening feeling you find in other superhero movies, where the hero could actually dies at the hands of the villain.
All in all, the film will resemble the television show in its fundamentals, in that Banner will be on the run, and knows he is cursed with a monster inside him, and the challenge will be to see that the monster can also be a hero.

Late in post-production, Mychael Danna, who had been hired to score the film, was relieved of his duties, and Elfman, super--scorer that he is, was hired to lend musical expression to Ang Lee's ill-tempered green giant.
The Hulk proves the formula is still viable, as Elfman's score is brilliant, matching the scope and tone of the picture, proving to be progressive, often exhilirating and touched with Elfman's unique brand of tragedy.
"Hulk's Freedom" brings back the vocals and percussion for a victorious and thundering fanfare, and Elfman continues the triumphant vibe in "A Man Again", stating the main theme without a hint of sadness, while Eastern percussion makes a return.

UGO Screenwriter's Voice - Film Review -- Hulk
Given the unfortunate amount of marketing surrounding this film in terms of crowd friendly cross-promotions with Chrysler/Dodge and Burger King, as well as the large barrage of action figures and toys, there was the expectation of wall-to-wall mind-numbing action.
However, as a comic book film, it does have its fair share of dazzling action sequences, a personal favourite being where the military attempts to halt his rampage in the middle of a dessert.
An important factor for the film is also the level of faithfulness to the source material.

Eric Bana excels as Hulk’s alter ego, pulling off the difficult trick of portraying a man whose struggle is largely internal, forever battling with his simmering rage, and always scratching around in his subconscious for the repressed memories which hold the key to his mysterious past.
Jennifer Connelly, meanwhile, is outstanding as Dr Betty Ross, a woman resigned to being pushed away by the men she should be closest to — namely her Hulk-hunting father General Ross (Sam Elliott, on typically gruff military form) and ex-lover Bruce.
