 Outrigger Canoe Hull Design Protection
Design owners are therefore increasingly aware of the importance of protecting their hull designs from pirates who copy their designs by means of "plug-molding" (making a mold directly from an original hull), avoiding enormous costs in time and money spent developing those designs.
Since the only way to be sure a design is protected is to obtain judicial determination, a forced election between design protection and copyright registration may cause designers to abandon design protection when they may not be sure they have copyright protection.
The design is protected as soon as it's made public or registration for the design is published (17 USCA ยง1304.).

The design, completed prior to the passage of the 4 March 1917 Act, provided for an overall length of 110', a displacement of 85 tons, a maximum speed of 18 knots, and a complement of two officers and 24 men.
They retained their letter number names, abbreviated "SC.," but now also had hull numbers beginning with "PC-." Thus, for instance, USS S.C. Relatively few 110 footers remained by this time, many having been disposed of after the war's end, but they were gicen the same PC- series numbers that they had borne as names.
The symbol PC was retained for the steel 173 footers, and the separate symbol SC was adopted for the 110 foot vessels.

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, a frigate was a sailing vessel designed for speed, with a flush gun deck carrying 24 to 44 guns, used as a commerce raider and for blockade duty.
With the introduction of steam and steel warships frigates as a class of warship passed out of use until World War II when they were reintroduced by the British as an antisubmarine escort vessel larger than a corvette but smaller than a destroyer.
Designed as cost-efficient surface combatants, they lack the multi-mission capability necessary for modern surface combatants faced with multiple, high-technology threats and offer limited capacity for growth.

Ships proceeding from Trinidad were convoyed to a designated point from which they fanned out to take various routes to their ultimate destination.
This Task Group was designed to hunt U-boats in the central Atlantic; the three PC-boats would escort Big Horn, which would act as bait and support in antisubmarine combat, as well as fuel and supply ship for the escorts.

 Copyright - Patent Attorney (Ventre)
design patent might also be described as protecting expression, but an important distinction is that a patent prevents others from using what is patented regardless of whether it is independently developed; a copyright does not, except as noted for water craft hull designs in the next paragraph.
In addition to a hull, the registration can apply to a plug, which is a model of a vessel used to make a mold; and a mold for a vessel, which is a form in which a substance for material is used.
One important advantage is that registration gives the design owner 2 years from public disclosure of the hull design to seek registration, as opposed to only one year for a design patent.

Nautilus Overview (USS Explorer II Technical Manual)
Originally designed to counter torpedo boats, these small and fast vessels were given mission after mission, ranging from shore bombardment to convoy escort to screening the main fleet to anti-submarine warfare, and excelled in each role.
Starfleet decided to use the designation "frigate" because frigates during the age of sail traditionally assumed the roles of scouting, message delivery, coastal patrol, and convoy escort.
The Mk VII design staff was more than delighted to confirm the theory proven at Trafalgar, and perhaps earlier, that big ships make big targets despite their big guns.

 Coast Guard cutter designations
Some were assigned builders' numbers prior to their construction but that number was never used to designate a cutter that was in commission.
Those hull numbers were preceded by the letters "CG." The destroyers kept their names as well and so were the first and only Coast Guard named-vessels, up to that time, that also had hull numbers.
Regardless of their changing designations, the cutters in the fleet have always been capable of handling a multitude of missions, sail in any weather, and persevere through any crisis the nation has had.

However, a white rose (which also symbolises Yorkshire) or a "tudor rose" (symbolising the end of the War of the Roses) may also be used on different occasions.
