From the Domesday book, it appears that at the time of the survey, the village of Kirk Ella, was a part of the possessions of Ralph de Mortimer.
"WEST ELLA, in the parish of Kirk Ella, and wapentake of Hullshire; and adjoining Kirk Ella, (the seat of the Rev. Richard Sykes.)
Sykes' house is in the parish of Kirk-Ella.

The associated royal charter, dated April 1, 1299 remains preserved in Hull's Guildhall Archives.
In 1440, the former borough acquired the status of a city becoming a county corporate administratively separate from Yorkshire and having jurisdiction over an area extending west of the city known as Hullshire.
Hull was a major port during the Later Middle Ages and its merchants traded widely to ports in Northern Germany and the Baltic region and the Low Countries.

Hi to all, I think HULLSHIRE probably disappeared when Hull became the City and County of Kingston upon Hull.
HULLSHIRE contained such areas as North Ferriby, Anlaby, Hessle, Kirk Ella, Dairycoates, Swanland and Willerby.
It would have also have have contained other small hamlets within these parishes.

Towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century there was a number of books published on the dialect used in East Yorkshire and Holderness.

"Hull, or Kingston upon Hull, with the parishes of Hessle, Kirk Ella and North Ferriby forms the distinct county called Hullshire (or the town and county of Kingston upon Hull).
The town of Hull itself contains two parishes: Holy Trinity and St. Mary's.
