In memoriam: Hendrik Christoffel van de Hulst
Henk van de Hulst was born in Utrecht, The Netherlands, on November 19, 1918.
The decision to become an astronomer was taken in Henk van de Hulst's second year at the University of Utrecht, and was strongly influenced by the lectures given by M. Minnaert, well-known for his educational talents.
At the meeting, Henk gave a talk in which he suggested that neutral atomic hydrogen, which in its hyperfine transition radiates and absorbs at a wavelength of 21 cm, might be expected to occur at such high column densities as to provide a spectral line sufficiently strong as to be measurable.

The Bruce Medalists: Hendrik C. van de Hulst
“Henk” van de Hulst was born and educated in Utrecht, where he completed his war-interrupted doctorate under Marcel Minnaert in 1946.
He made his most important discovery during the war: stimulated by a suggestion of Jan Oort, van de Hulst predicted in 1944 that clouds of hydrogen gas in space should emit and absorb a spectral line at wavelength 21 cm.
After this radiation was detected in 1951, he, Oort, and C. Alex Muller led the Dutch team which, along with an Australian team, mapped the clouds of the Milky Way and delineated its spiral structure.

van de Hulst, Hendrik (“Henk”) Christoffel (1918-2000)
A Dutch astronomer, born and educated in Utrecht, who made his most important contribution while still a student: his 1944 prediction that clouds of cold hydrogen gas in space should emit and absorb a spectral line at a wavelength of 21 cm (see 21-cm line).
Following the detection of this radiation in 1951 by American physicists Edward Purcell (1912-) and Harold Ewen (1922-1997), the Dutch team of van der Hulst, Jan Oort, and C. Alex Muller began mapping the distribution of neutral hydrogen clouds in the Milky Way and delineating its spiral structure.
Subsequently, van de Hulst made studies of interstellar grains and their interaction with electromagnetic radiation, investigated the solar corona, and wrote important books on light scattering and radio astronomy.
