The Hulun Lake, also called the Dalai Lake, is one of the five largest freshwater lakes in China and the largest lake in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
The Hulun Lake abounds in various cash fish such as carp, crucian carp, red fins, pike, and catfish and also rare white shrimp.
The lake is the habitat for 241 bird species, including crane, gull, swan, wild goose, duck and lovebird, which amount to 1/5 of the total bird species in China.

The plant, known to the locals as "Bayanhan", is located on the grassland of the Ewenki Autonomous Banner in Hulun Buir city, said Xu Zhanjiang, a researcher on the history of Japanese biological war with the Harbin Municipal Academy of Social Sciences in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.
Xu said the Japanese had set up the toxic gas plant here because the outlying grassland was sparsely populated and therefore other people were unlikely to find out about their atrocity.
Cultural heritage authorities in Hulun Buir city say they plan to include the plant as a heritage site for better preservation.

A Tengger inscription believed to date from 851 in the ancient Javanese Caka calendar (929 A.D.) indicates that hulun, or devotees of Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa (God Almighty), men of sublime character, once lived in the Tengger mountain range.
Another inscription that dates back to 1405 A.D. in Wonokiti village, Pananjakan, mentions Walandit, a hamlet inhabited by hulun who were exempted from tax for their spiritual holiness.
The ancestral religion of Tengger people is hard to ascertain though historically this community is closer to Hinduism.
