The Hulunbuir Grasslands (Hulunbei'er da caoyuan), despite recent tourist infiltration, are still one of the best and lushest in China.
The grasslands here are known locally as the "most unsullied prairie" (Zui chunjing de caoyuan), because of the lack of pollution and the uninterrupted green that, in summer, stretches in all directions.
Hulunbuir is fed by hundreds of rivers, large and small, that have made this area highly popular with the Mongolian nomads and herders.

Hulunbuir (Chinese: 呼伦贝尔; Pinyin: Hūlúnbèi'ěr) is a prefecture-level city in Inner Mongolia.
Hulunbuir is the name of the entire region; its center is Hailar, which is administratively a district, and the actual city in reality.
Until October 10, 2001, it was a league - a class of territorial division unique to Inner Mongolia.

The Hulunbuir region, in what is now northeastern Inner Mongolia, was part of the jurisdiction of the General of Heilongjiang, one of the three generals of Manchuria.
Fengtien was also established as a province in southern Manchuria, and most of Jirim league came under it.
In 1969 during the Cultural Revolution, much of Inner Mongolia was distributed among surrounding provinces, with Hulunbuir divided between Heilongjiang and Jilin, Jirim going to Jilin, Juu Uda to Liaoning, and the Alashan and Ejine region divided among Gansu and Ningxia.

Local government is to invest 16.3 billion yuan (US$1.96 billion) over the next five years to battle environmental deterioration in Hulunbuir Grassland, the country's biggest meadow and part of North China's ecological barrier.
The decision was made by the government of the Hulunbuir League under North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, following the suggestion of the China Association of Agricultural Societies and China's Agriculture Experts Group.
As part of the country's environment construction plan, the league has begun a massive campaign to plant trees and grass in the farming lands and deserts.
