Graphical user interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A graphical user interface (or GUI, often pronounced "gooey"), is a particular case of user interface for interacting with a computer which employs graphical images and widgets in addition to text to represent the information and actions available to the user.
GUIs were introduced in reaction to the steep learning curve of command line interfaces (CLI), text-based user interfaces requiring commands to be typed on the keyboard.
Applications may also provide both interfaces, and when they do the GUI is usually a WIMP wrapper around the CLI version.

A graphical user interface (or GUI, pronounced "gooey") is a method of interacting with a computer through a metaphor of direct manipulation of graphical images and widgets in addition to text.
The GUI is generally contrasted with the command line interface (CLI), an earlier, text-only interface that required the user to type in commands or text strings to cause the computer to take some action.
Designing suitable interfaces for handheld devices, such as PDA applications and their smartphone cousins, has been a major challenge for user interface designers, and some of the more successful diverge considerably from desktop computer designs.

IIMS 1994: Ring, Ellis and Reeves - mental models research and human computer interface design
Laurel (1990) defines user interface as a combination of "the physical properties of the interactors, the functions to be performed, and the balance of power and control" (p.xii).
Their focus on interface design is first, making the modes of interaction as obvious as possible so that they even become "transparent" or "second nature" to the user, and second, making the media as appropriate as possible to the nature of the content.
Given that our understanding of human perception should play a crucial role in the design of interfaces, research on mental models is a promising approach for analysing the human computer interaction and improving interface designs.

The PUI consists of graphical widgets (often provided by widget toolkit libraries) such as windows, menus, radio buttons, check boxes, and icons, and employs a pointing device (such as a mouse, trackball, or touchscreen) in addition to a keyboard.
Many research groups in North America and Europe are currently working on the Zooming User Interface or ZUI, which is a logical advancement on the GUI, blending some 3D movement with 2D or "2 and a half D" vectorial objects.
